BOYS TRACK: Meets at Van Meter, Martensdale give a couple more chances to grow

Nodaway Valley's Landon LaBarge runs in the 100-meter dash in a recent meet.

As they near the halfway point of the outdoor track meet schedule, the Nodaway Valley boys competed in two meets last week. Both were vastly different in terms of weather conditions, as teams have had to adjust to the ups and downs of spring in Iowa.

The Wolverines were at Van Meter Monday, April 15 and at Martensdale-St. Marys on April 18. The Wolverines were scheduled to be at Madrid Tuesday night and will be back on the track Thursday at the Griswold co-ed meet. After those meets, Nodaway Valley will shift full attention to the 2024 Pride of Iowa Conference meet that is April 29 at Mount Ayr.

Nodaway Valley junior Trent Warner captured two field event wins at the Martensdale-St. Marys meet, winning shot put with a top throw of 47 feet, 7 3/4 inches, and discus with a throw of 123 feet, 2 inches. Warner is near the top of the POI in both events. He is second behind East Union’s Morgan Cooley in the shot put, and fourth in the discus behind Cooley, Tate Dierking from Southeast Warren, and Tariq Miller from Central Decatur. Statewide Warner is ninth in Class 1A in the shot put and 25th in the discus.

Coach Chase Green said that his team was a little depleted at Monday’s Van Meter meet, however the team is using each week as an opportunity to continue to develop their track knowledge, character and leadership for not just this year, but future seasons.

“We had some key people gone early in the week and a couple of guys have some nagging minor injuries,” Green said.

“We continue to focus on getting enjoyment out of the guys and we are looking at future success and next year. There are no seniors this year. We are a young team. We are also using our season to prepare for leadership not only for this year but also for next year,” said Green.

Nodaway Valley claimed six season best times in individual events. Freshman Kaden Stonehocker and sophomore Landon LaBarge each had two season-best times in two separate events. Stonehocker was 19th in the 100-meter dash in 14.04 seconds and 19th in the 1,600-meter run in 5:54.22. LaBarge was 22nd in the 100-meter dash in 15.95 seconds and 20th in the 200-meter dash in 36 seconds.

The Wolverines had two top-10 finishes by athletes, both with season-best times. Eli Harris was sixth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:04.19 and Luke Kading seventh in the 1,600-meter run in 5:10.06. Harris is just outside of the top-10 times in the event in the POI and Kading’s time vaulted him to the fourth-best time in the 1,600-meter in the conference. Ashton Honnold also had a top-10 finish at the meet, placing tenth in the 200-meter dash in 26.12.

The Wolverines were entered in two relay events, the sprint medley and the distance medley. Both set season best times. The Wolverines ran in the sprint medley for the first time this season and the team of Avery Lewis, Haden Colton, Eli Harris, and Luke Kading placed seventh in a time of 1:52.95. The team’s best relay finish was in the distance medley, where Harris, Avery Lewis, Luke Kading and Colton finished in 4:16.12 for fourth place.

The Wolverines began the week with a meet at Van Meter.

Warner captured the top NV finish at the meet with a runner-up finish in the shot put. His top throw was 45 feet. He also placed sixth in the discus with a throw of 113 feet, 1 inch. Eli

Harris rounded up the top individual finish of the night on the track with his 400-meter hurdles time of 1:04.79, which gained him fifth place. Another top-10 finish went to Honnold, who was ninth in the 200 in 25.56.

Top relay finish of the night went to the distance medley, which took ninth in 4:23.03.
