GRIMES — Creston opened its boys wrestling tournament season Saturday at the Andy Davidson DCG Mustang Invite where they placed sixth with 113.5 points. Johnston won the invite for the second year in a row, scoring 263.5.
Though no Panthers won their bracket, 11 wrestlers placed, led by freshman Ben James (4-1) who took silver at 113, scoring 20.5 team points.
In the quarterfinals, James defeated Collin Tedrow of Carroll in a 16-0 technical fall. In the semifinals, he won in a 14-3 major decision against Peyton Philavanh of Dallas Center-Grimes.
In the championship bout, Zander Manz of Lewis Central, the No. 2 ranked 3A 106-pounder, took down James in a 12-1 major decision.
Freshman Landon Lillie placed third at 126, scoring the Panthers 17 team points.
In the quarterfinals, Lillie pinned Emperor Lewis of Des Moines East in the period.
DCG’s Blake Forrester took Lillie down in a 16-0 tech fall in the semifinals, but Lillie won the third-place match in a :26 second pin over Juan Avalos-Ceballos of Abraham Lincoln.
Four Panthers placed fourth after falling in the semifinals and the third-place bout.
Junior Kylen Parsons defeated Quinn Arellano of Van Meter in an 8-3 decision to advance to the semifinals, but he had tough Class 3A competition in the next two bouts.
In the semifinals, he was defeated by No. 2 Weston Porter of Lewis Central in a technical fall.
In the third-place match, he was pinned by No. 5 Caleb Arroyo of Urbandale.
Lane Travis took fourth at 132, scoring 12.5 team points. In the quarterfinals, he won in a 16-1 technical fall over Jacob Smith. Like Parsons, he now had to face two ranked Class 3A wrestlers.
In the semifinals, No. 6 Carter Schorsch of Lewis Central beat Travis in a 13-4 major decision.
The third-place match found Travis againt No. 3 Ayden Beck of DCG. Beck won in an 8-0 major decision.
Brodrick Phelps took fourth at 138, scoring 11 team points.
Phelps took down Richard Stokka of Urbandale and Jonathan Ryan of Abraham Lincoln in decisions to advance to the semifinals where he faced Nick Esser of DCG. Esser pinned Phelps with only five seconds remaining in the first period.
In the third place bout, Phelps was pinned in the final period by Isaiah Madison of Johnston.
Weston Trapp also earned fourth place, scoring 11 team points.
In the quarterfinals, he faced Tyde Nelsen of DCG in a defensive bout. Nelsen scored the first point with an escape in the second period. Trapp tied it up in the third with an escape. In overtime, Trapp earned the 3-point takedown with only one second remaining on the clock.
In the semifinals, No. 8 Owen Klocke of Carroll won over Trapp in an 8-4 decision, sending Trapp to wrestle for third.
In the third-place bout, Trapp faced Oliver Gray of Urbandale in a rollercoaster match.
Trapp scored the first 3 points with an early takedown, but an escape and takedown by Gray gave him the 4-3 lead heading into the second period. Trapp outscored Gray 3-2 in the second period to tie the score at 6 going into the final period. Though Trapp was able to escape twice in the final period, Gray’s takedown gave him the 9-8 decision.
Placing fifth was Colby Brammer at 144, scoring 10 team points while freshman Colt Key placed seventh at 106.
Earning eighth place was freshman Nate Bentley (157), junior Gunner Martwick (215) and junior Drake Wilson (285).
The Panthers return to action Thursday in a home triangular with Red Oak and Atlantic.
