SWCC baseball comes away with two wins over Iowa Lakes

SWCC’s Ben Amador pitched four innings Friday in a 19-10 win over Iowa Lakes Community College. He struck out three batters and allowed only one run.

Friday and Saturday, the Southwestern Community College baseball team hosted Iowa Lakes Community College for three games.

The Spartans (6-17, 2-3) came away with a win Friday and split with the Lakers on Saturday for a 2-1 weekend record.

In game one, the Spartans put up 19 runs, winning 19-10 over the visiting Lakers.

Iowa Lakes got out to a fast start against the Spartans, putting up two in the first and seven in the second to take a 9-1 lead after two innings.

Southwestern came back with strong, consistent scoring to take the lead.

SWCC scored five in the third, five in the fourth, four in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the seventh. They held the Lakers to just one run through the final seven innings.

Lane Rolfs led Spartan scoring, putting up four runs and two RBIs on six at bats.

Jackson McDanel and Ismael Benscome each scored two runs. McDanel  had a home run and  also logged five RBIs.

Jacob Angell also knocked one out of the park.

Ben Amador pitched four innings of the game, striking out three batters, allowing two hits and one  run.

The Lakers bull pen went through four pitchers trying to stop the Spartans.

In the first game of their Saturday doubleheader, the Spartans couldn’t find the offensive  rhythm and were outscored 6-4.

Pedro Sierra pitched five innings, allowing five runs and striking out four batters.

Daniel Cepeda led scoring with two runs on two plate appearances.

Eli Eldred hit a triple to send in a run, but Southwestern trailed throughout the game.

In game two, it was finally the Spartans who showed up early, putting up six runs in the first inning to set the pace.

The Lakers looked to come back in the third with a four-run inning, but each team finished the game with three more runs, giving the Spartans the 9-7 win.

Eldred pitched the first five innings, striking out six batters and allowing seven runs.

Alfred Aviles came in to claim the win, allowing no runs in the final four innings.

Alexander Arroyo and Cepeda led scoring with two runs each.

Designated hitter Brayden Mitchell logged three RBIs to lead the team.

The Spartans return to action at home Wednesday in a doubleheader with North Iowa Area Community College before traveling to Ellsworth for the weekend.
