Track, softball, baseball and golf are all in competition season for the Southwestern Spartans.

Softball wins four

Since Saturday, the Spartans softball team has played six games, winning four.

They started by sweeping Central Community College -— Columbus of Nebraska, 16-5 and 9-1 on Saturday.

Brooklyn Hadl and Calie Allen each put up three runs in game one while Emma Moore and Joslyn Plicky each had three RBIs.

Kristen Streeter and Erika Kruse pitched, Streeter striking out four and allowing five runs while Streeter struck out one and allowed one run.

Bailey Hosbach pitched game two, striking out six while also scoring two runs for the team.

Tuesday the Spartans dropped two against Allen County Community College in Iola, Kansas.

Allen and Policky each scored one run in the 4-2 game one loss. Kruse pitched five innings, striking out six.

In game two, the Spartans lost 5-3. Earning runs were Kruse, Clara O’Brien and Lily McCrae.

Wednesday the Spartans played in Harrison, Arkansas, against North Arkansas college. They came away with two wins: 7-5 and 8-3.

Cara Ostrem pitched five innings in game one, striking out nine batters and allowing two runs. Kruse led the offense with two runs.

In game two, Hadl led scoring with two runs on three hits. Hosbach pitched six innings, throwing out five batters and allowing two runs.

The Spartans played at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas Thursday, but results were not yet in by press time.

SWCC opens at home Wednesday against Iowa Lakes Community College.

Men’s golf competes at Crestview Spring Invite

WICHITA, Kan. – The Southwestern Spartans men’s golf team put together a solid performance at the Crestview Spring Invitational, finishing tied for fifth in a strong 13-team field hosted by NAIA No. 5 Friends University.

Competing against a mix of NAIA and NJCAA programs, the Spartans secured second place among the four NJCAA teams in the tournament.

Southwestern posted a team total of +62 over three rounds.

Freddie Muggeridge led the Spartans with a +7 total, finishing in a tie for 12th overall. His second-round 69 (-3) was a standout performance, demonstrating his ability to go low against a competitive field.

Spring break baseball update

With the 2024-25 season well underway, the Spartans baseball team continues to push forward despite a challenging start.

Offensively, the Spartans (3-12) have showcased their ability to get on base, posting a team batting average of .268 and an on-base percentage of .397. The lineup has produced 71 runs across 15 games.

The Spartans found a pair of wins March 1 against Highland Community College of Kansas, but then suffered close losses against Highland and Coffeyville.

The Spartans play at home next on Saturday, March 22 and 23 against Iowa Lakes.
