Creston girls used the third quarter to try and make up for the hole they were in the first quarter, but it wasn’t enough Friday as Kuemper beat the Panthers 54-42.
Kuemper started the game with a a 7-0 lead not even three minutes in. Creston’s Brynn Tussey finally put her team on the scoreboard with 4:30 left to trail 8-2. Tussey’s shot wasn’t enough to shift the momentum as Kuemper continued its offense and built an 18-5 lead at the end of the quarter.
Trailing 33-15 at halftime, Creston almost returned the favor in the third quarter. The Panthers scored the first nine points of the quarter to get the deficit to nine. A Kuemper basket ended Creston’s run. The Panthers responded with a smooth reverse layup by Ella Turner to keep the difference under 10. Turner’s two free throws later in the quarter made it a 40-33 lead for Kuemper.
“They came out and punched us in the mouth in the first half,” said Creston coach Tony Neubauer. “Our biggest thing was were 1-10 free throws and missed a bunch of bunnies. That’s our achilles heel,” he said about missing the high percentage shots.
“We got it down to seven a couple of times. How do you learn to respond? We have to able to settle down and get some good looks and scores. We get eight or six of those free throws and a couple more shots, it’s a different game.”
Kuemper kept its lead in the second quarter off of three consecutive 3-point shots made by Kylie Simons.
“She was scary good in the first half,” Neubauer said. “It’s basketball, it’s a game of runs. I was happy with the third. Our goal was to cut it in half and that is exactly what we did. But we didn’t have the energy to get it all back.”
Kadley Bailey led Creston with 16 points from 5-10 shooting, 2-3 at the 3-point line and was 4-6 at the free throw line. Braylee Pokorny scored seven form 3-6 shooting and 1-2 free throws. Turner finished with six points.
