Kuemper boys leave Creston way behind

Creston's CT Stalker eyes the basket Friday in the Panthers loss to Kuemper.

It was not pretty for Creston on the court or sidelines Friday in its 99-50 loss to visiting Kuemper.

Kuemper started out scoring the first eight points of the game, six from 3-point shots. Creston called a timeout just a minute into the game. The break helped as Creston scored the next five points. That would be as close as Creston would get as Kuemper started its momentum that turned into extending the lead.

About five minutes later, with 2:01 left in the quarter, Creston only had eight points and had a 10-point deficit. The Knights found another 10 more points before the end of the quarter to lead 28-13 at the end.

Kuemper’s effective scoring continued in the second quarter having built a 33-15 lead. Creston scored a bucket off a steal at the 4:20 mark. Moments after that, the mood of the game changed.

Creston coach Bryce Schafer was called for a technical foul with 3:47 left in the half. After Kuemper made the free throws, 10 seconds later Schafer was called for his second technical and ejected from the game.

At the 2:40 mark, Kuemper was up 48-20.

“They can shoot it really well and they shot it really well,” said assistant coach Chris Tibbals who took over in Schafer’s absence.

Tibbals said they knew the entire Kuemper team is capable of scoring, despite the defensive strategy placed on them.

“We had a hand in their face and they still got shots off,” Tibbals said.

Despite the lopsided score, Tibbals said Creston didn’t have the right setting to make defensive adjustments.

“The intitial start of the game they hit a couple of threes and that is what we were not looking for. But we were hoping to maybe sneak a few with man defense. We were never able to hit that game plan as they made those shots right out of the gate.”

Kuemper finished with 40-57 shooting and was 12-21 from the 3-point line. Kuemper made 7-9 free throws.

Kuemper led 57-22 at halftime. Although Creston scored 19 third-quarter points, Kuemper still outpaced the Panthers the third and fourth quarters.

Rhett Driskell was the top scorer for Creston with 13 points. He was 5-10 shooting and made all three of his free throws. Parker Varner finished with 12 on 4-7 shooting and 3-5 from the 3-point line. He made one of two free throws.

Jake Hoyt finished with eight points. He also had a team-high four rebounds. Driskell had three asissts to lead the team.

Shenandoah

Creston dominated the third quarter Jan. 21 in a convincing 67-32 win at Shenandoah.

Creston went into halftime with a 28-19 lead. Three was the common denominator in the third quarter as Creston scored 30 points to Shenandoah’s three.

The Panthers held the Mustangs to seven points in the first quarter. Shenandoah responded with 12 points in the second quarter. Creston scored nine in the second, as it did in the last quarter.

As a team, Creston was 29-59 shooting. The Panthers made 7-17 3-point shots. Free throws were few as Creston made two of six attempts. Creston had 32 rebounds, 15 steals and only had eight turnovers.

Hoyt finished as high score for Creston with 18. He was 8-12 from the field and made one 3-point shot, his only attempt. He also made his only free throw shot. Driskell finished with 13 points from 5-6 shooting and made all three 3-points shots.

Hoyt had a double-double as he led the Panthers with 12 rebounds. He also had six steals. Ayden Purdum had six rebounds. Varner had three assists.

Shenandoah finished 11-43 shooting and was 2-18 from the 3-point line. The Mustangs were 8-14 at the free throw line. Shenandoah had 29 rebounds and committed 18 turnovers.
