Panthers sweep doubleheader at Red Oak

RED OAK — The Panthers basketball teams each came away with a conference victory Monday night in Red Oak as they swept the doubleheader.

GIRLS

The girls had a dominant performance, winning 64-36 with four Panthers scoring double digits. Ella Turner led scoring with 17 while Kadley Bailey had 16 and Hollynn Rieck and Brynn Tussey each put up 11.

The defense was tough again this game as the team capitalized on 19 steals. Bailey led with five while Tussey contributed four.

A strong defensive start got the Panthers (5-7) out to a 19-4 lead after the first quarter. The Tigers (0-9) came back in the second quarter with a 14-point performance, but Creston put up another 19 to lead 38-18 at the half.

Though the Panthers were out-rebounded 38-37, it was still one of their most impressive performances on the boards this season. Rieck led with seven while freshman Jensan Tussey contributed six off the bench. Turner had five. Braylee Pokorny had two blocks on defense.

By the end of the third quarter, the Panthers were up 51-24 and were able to get playing time to girls on the bench. The bench posted nine points and and 18 rebounds.

The Panther shooting performance from the field was one of their best of the year, making 28/57 shots for 49.1%.

BOYS

The Panthers (5-5) narrowly held off a fourth-quarter comeback by the Tigers (4-7), winning 60-58 after Red Oak put up 22 points in the final quarter. It was the only period the Tigers outscored the Panthers as Creston had a 42-36 lead after the third.

Jake Hoyt led Panther scoring with 17 while sophomore Rhett Driskell pitched in 15 and Parker Varner logged 14, including three 3-pointers.

Tigers sophomore Reese Montgomery was a menace for the Panthers, putting up a game-high 29 points and 10 rebounds. Creston out-rebounded Red Oak 34-31 led by Hoyt with 10. Driskell added six.

Free-throw percentage was low for both teams, the Panthers leading with a 54.5% compared to 50% by the Tigers. From the field, the Panthers were 21/49 for 42.9%. Red Oak shot 23/61 for 37.7%.

On defense, Driskell had three steals while Josh Schaefer and Varner each contributed two.

Both Panther teams return to action Thursday as they host conference opponent Lewis Central.
