Panthers preview H10 opponents at Shenandoah

Junior Hector Suazo led the Panthers at Shenandoah Tuesday with a 19th-place finish in 20:07.92.

SHENANDOAH — The Early Bird Classic in Shenandoah always provides an opportunity for the Panthers to preview conference opponents in action with six Hawkeye 10 teams competing.

Red Oak came away with the win in the boys race with 47 points. In the girls race Harlan placed first as a team.

Boys

Despite only having five varsity runners, the Panthers were able to pull off a seventh-place finish in the 11-team field.

Junior Hector Suazo and sophomore Wyatt Goodenberger led Creston, coming in together at 19th and 20th, respectively. Suazo ran 20:07.92 with Goodenberger just behind at 20:10.08.

Junior Kylen Parsons placed 41st in 22:52.43, freshman Colt Key ran 24:56.81 for 59th and senior Spencer Brown took 69th in 26:15 to round out Panther scoring.

Girls

The Panthers struggled without lead runners Payton Davis and Cora Smith, but Reese Strunk stepped up to lead the team, medaling with a 20th-place finish. Strunk ran a 23:31.58.

Senior Karter Clayton and junior Maylee Riley came in at 32nd (25:29.88) and 35th (25:37.37), respectively. Also finishing together were Gretchen Hoepker (28:52.94) and Abby Freeman (29:59.21) at 58th and 60th.

The girls took seventh out of the seven teams.

The Panthers compete tonight at West Central Valley. Coach Maggie Arnold hopes to have everyone back competing Tuesday at Winterset.
