Eagles baseball records broken

Tied for second in Pride of Iowa baseball standings, the East Union Eagles are 15-6 with a 9-4 record. Martensdale-St. Mary’s has a solid lead on the conference, Bedford tied with East Union in second place.

There’s no question this is the best baseball season the Eagles have had in decades, and the results show it — three Eagles combining to set six new school records.

On offense, senior Austin Lack has been raining in the runs, breaking the single-season and career runs records. This season, he’s scored 28 for the Eagles on 74 at-bats. He has a .446 batting average. This record tops 25 held by Wyatt Mairet from 2021. He has 74 career runs, most coming from his junior and senior seasons. Mairet also held this previous record with 59 scored from 2018-2022.

At the plate, junior Fischer Buffington now holds the doubles record, his career total of 16 topping the 15 by Braden Martinez from 2015-2018.

On the mound, senior Seth Hudson crushed three records — career wins, strikeouts and innings pitched.

This season, Hudson has pitched 43.2 innings over eight games, striking out 52 batters for a 1.76 ERA. In his career, he’s pitched seven winning games, topping six by Ethan Mitchell from 2017-2021. Sitting at 147 2/3 innings pitched breaks the record of 143 1/3 held by Ryan Bryson from 2008-2011.

Mitchell held the strikeout record of 169 from 2017-2021, but Hudson’s 173 is now the school record.

Tonight the Eagles play at Griswold before hosting ACGC Tuesday for senior night. Postseason begins July 6 with the Eagles hosting Mormon Trail.
