KEARNEY, Neb. — Jackson Kinsella of Creston, a redshirt sophomore wrestler at the University of Nebraska-Kearney, is ranked 10th nationally at 197 pounds in NCAA Division II wrestling by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA).

The Lopers are 2-2 in duals, including a 35-9 loss at Div. I Stanford, and ranked 10th nationally. The Lopers travel to No. 13 Chadron State on Friday.

Bearcats 7-0

MARYVILLE, Mo. — The Northwest Missouri State University women’s basketball team is 7-0 and off to the best start since the 1997-98 season.

Kelsey Fields, 6-2 junior center from Creston, is averaging 8.6 rebounds and 10.7 points per game for the Bearcats. She ranks fourth in the MIAA in rebounds (60) through seven games.

Northwest, 2-0 in league play, has two conference road challenges scheduled this week at Fort Hays State (7-0, 2-0) on Thursday and Nebraska-Kearney (7-1, 1-1) on Saturday. The Bearcats rank 20th in the nation in scoring offense at 77.9 points per game.

Bowl game

FORT DODGE — Ty Morrison, 5-11, 205-pound freshman from Creston, saw time in the fourth quarter at inside linebacker for the Iowa Central Community College football team in Sunday’s 44-9 Game One Bowl victory over No. 5-ranked Snow College in the UNI-Dome.

Iowa Central, ranked 11th nationally, finished with a 7-4 record in securing its 13th straight bowl victory.

Playoff loss

SIOUX CENTER — Derek Paup, 6-1, 248-pound sophomore defensive lineman from Creston, was a member of the Dordt University football team that lost to Northwestern College, 7-0, in the first round of the NAIA playoffs on Nov. 25.

Paup had 10 tackles for the Defenders, including 6.0 tackles for losses and 5.0 sacks as a rush end.

Dordt finished its season at 9-3. Northwestern (12-0) advanced to the quarterfinal round.

Simpson football

INDIANOLA — Briley Hayes of Creston was a running back and special teams player for the Simpson College football team this fall.

The 5-10, 180-pound sophomore rushed for 181 yards and two touchdowns on 57 carries, with a longest gain of 48 yards. Hayes also had 16 pass receptions for 110 yards and one TD for the Storm, which finished 3-7. He also had three tackles and a fumble recovery on special teams.

Vikings 8-1

DES MOINES — Brianna Fields of Creston is a varsity player for the 8-1 Grand View women’s basketball team.

Fields, a 5-11 sophomore power forward, is averaging 2.9 points and 1.4 rebounds while playing 7.7 minutes per game for the Vikings, including a 14-point performance in a 72-58 win over Morningside. She had two points and one rebound in Tuesday’s 58-56 loss to Benedictine, the Vikings’ first setback of the season.

Grand View travels to Culver-Stockton in Canton, Missouri, on Saturday.
