Atlantic wins Hawkeye Ten girls golf

Creston’s Downing ties for 15th

DENISON — Atlantic won the Hawkeye Ten Conference girls golf tournament Monday and Kuemper Catholic freshman Addy Beiter won the individual title in a playoff with Atlantic’s Belle Berg.

Berg and Beiter both shot 18-hole rounds of 92 at Majestic Hills Golf Course, with Beiter winning in the playoff. The Trojans shot 383 to win the team title. Clarinda was runner-up at 409.

Creston has three players this season and did not qualify in the team scoring. Senior Mikaela Downing missed out on all-conference status after shooting 47 on the front nine. She shot 56 on the back nine for a total round of 103 to tie for 15th place.

“Mikaela was four strokes out of contention for All-Hawkeye Ten,” coach Steve Shantz said. “She shot really well on the front, but tired on the hilly conditions on the back and shot nine strokes worse.”

Also for the Panthers, Kylie Metheny shot 61-60 — 121 and Averi Culbertson shot 52-71 — 133.

“Averi shot well on the front also before going back to the hills,” Shantz said. “Kylie shot one of her better rounds of the year and is getting better.”

The Creston girls compete in the Class 3A regional tournament at Edmundson Golf Course in Oskaloosa on May 17.
