Boys Tennis
Last weekend, some of Creston’s tennis boys competed in the Boone Invitational where kids play in one bracket all day.
“Today was the first day this Spring where the elements just weren’t ideal for tennis,” Coach Kevin Cooper said. “We were probably lucky we got to play as much as we did. The rain shut down the tournament in the last round. It is a great event for our players to see some great competition.”
With several kids not competing due to ACT testing, the Panthers took sixth with 34 points. Boone won the invitational with 209 points.
In singles, Connor Wiley found an 8-1 victory over Braydon Thompson of South Tama. The doubles team of Damion Meyer and Thayer Rooney won 6-3 against Ryan Johnson and Jayce Harvey of South Tama.
Monday, the boys traveled to Chariton where they fell in a 6-3 loss.
“Tonight we really struggled with consistency again in a few of our matches and that was the difference in the meet,” Cooper said. “We just have to continue to work on the basics until we can get some of the kids back on track.”
Finding wins in singles were Carson Cooper, 8-3 over Kade Williams and Damion Meyer, 9-7 over Dominique Colburn. Carson had continued success in doubles with partner Lucas Rushing as they defeated Zach Poling and Gage Hart 9-7.
“It was nice to get back on the court for the week. It is hard to believe how fast the season is going,” Cooper said. “We are down to a few more duals left and then our Hawkeye 10 Tournament.”
The boys host Clarke tonight at 4:30 p.m.
Girls Tennis
Thursday, the Panthers had a 7-2 showing at home against Audubon.
“It was nice to get our match in tonight, because it was touch and go this afternoon,” Coach Kevin Cooper said. “I think tonight you could really see some of the improvements our girls have made throughout the season.”
Creston had a 3-0 sweep in doubles to start the night.
In singles, Josie Mahan defeated Gery Anderson 8-4, Ava Adamson beat Ava Slater 8-3, Sasha Wurster won against Jordan Porsch 8-4 and Kolbey Bailey had an 8-5 victory over Joselynn Moreno.
“We played really well in singles and were able to come back in a few matches that we got down early in,” Cooper said. “We still have a lot to work on, hopefully we can take another step this year.”
The girls return to action tonight at the Knoxville Invitational.
Boys Golf
Thursday Creston hosted a triangular golf meet where the boys took second place.
“It was quite a change from the last week with cold and windy conditions,” Coach Steve Shantz said. “We still need more touch around the greens and consistency overall with our irons.”
Jade Spangler of Shenandoah took first with a score of 39. Leading Creston was Carson Rieck taking fifth with a 46. Following were Chasse Downing, 49, and Max Skellenger, 50, placing sixth and seventh, respectively.
The boys return to action today with a dual meet against Clarke.
Girls Golf
Monday, Creston girls participated in the Winterset Tournament where they continued to show improvement.
“Our number one, Makaela Downing was at state FFA so we only had two golfers who I thought showed a ton of improvement,” Coach Bryce Schaefer said. “Averi Culbertson scored a 117 which is 6 strokes better than her last tournament in Shenandoah. She was driving the ball much better, and we look to improve our short game and putting to drop those scores even more.”
Winterset won the tournament with a score of 384.
“Kylie (Metheny) was coming off of injury for her first tournament of the year and scored a 132,” Schaefer said. “I saw great strides not only swing-wise, but also ability to shake off frustration and continue to push through adversity.”
Thursday the girls competed in Creston’s triangular meet where Downing was the medalist shooting a 47. Culbertson scored 57 and Methany a 60.
The girls return to action today with a dual meet against Clarke.
