Creston boys cap busy week with third-place finish

OSCEOLA — After competing in three track and field meets in four days, the Creston boys put a bow on the busy week with a Class A third-place finish at the Clarke Goos Invitational.

“We like to use this week as a conditioning week, and no better way to do it than to just go out and compete,” Coach Maggie Arnold said. “I think they responded fairly well. Today we did some great things here, and we’re looking forward to next week being a two-meet week.”

Junior Brandon Briley led the boys with a victory in the 800 meter run and a come-from-behind victory in the distance medley relay with teammates Jaydan Pettegrew, Payton Conley and Austin Evans.

“We came here wanting to win a couple, one being that DMR,” Arnold said. “Those guys posted a season-best time.”

The team ran a 3:49.16, topping their previous best of 3:52.03. “Austin Evans had a really good night tonight posting some personal bests in a couple of his races,” Arnold said. In the DMR, Evans posted a new personal best 400 m split of 54.22. In the 200 m dash, Evans’ time of :25.59 topped his previous best of :26.06

“We wanted to test Brandon Briley’s stamina going from the DMR 800 to the open 800,” Arnold said. “He didn’t run his best time of the season, but that wasn’t what we were looking for. We were looking for a first-place finish, and I thought he ran a really smart race.”

After getting boxed in early in the race, Briley kicked it up a notch in the last 200 meters, overtaking Ethan Stalzer of Albia for the win.

The boys sprint medley relay of Tyler Riley, Chris Aragon, Evans and Pettegrew ran a time of 1:47.28 to take first in Class A.

Junior Quinten Fuller posted a new personal best and second-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 44-01. Max Chapman took fourth with his throw of 43 feet.

“Max and Q have had a pretty good week. They’re finally getting consistent at those distances we want to see them at,” Arnold said. “They’re both looking really good. As juniors, we need them to score points in both events and get us those double team points every time. So there’s a lot of pressure on them and they’ve responded very well this week.”

In discus, Chapman took second place with his throw of 132-03 and Fuller followed in third with 128-01.

Running into the wind, Pettegrew landed third in the boys 110 meter hurdles with a time of 16.99.

Other notable finishes include the boys 4x200m relay and the shuttle hurdle relay placing second and the 4x400m relay placing third.

“Right now, our underclassmen are a little bit beat up so we haven’t used them a whole lot this week,” Arnold said. “This is a big difference between the schedule you run in junior high and then when you come up to high school. Tyler Riley, he’s a sophomore, and he does a nice job just being super consistent for us in those sprints. I thought he looked really good.”

In Class B, East Union took fifth place with 61 points.

Austin Lack took first in the 400m hurdles and second in the high jump to lead the team. The 4x400m relay team narrowly defeated Wayne to take first place.

Finishing second were the distance medley relay and the 4x200m relay. Emmet Long took third in the 200m dash.

The Creston boys and girls will reunite Tuesday at Lewis Central for a coed meet featuring 13 other teams.

“It’s just been a hard competition week for them,” Arnold said. “We’ll practice hard tomorrow, give them the weekend off and then be ready to go on Monday.”
