GLENWOOD — Doryn Paup of Creston and Taylor Lumbard of Diagonal were part of the winning team that made a comeback in the championship match of the sixth annual KMA All-Star Volleyball Classic Sunday.
Also appearing at the event held at Glenwood High School were Teryn Shields of Murray, Cadence Douglas of Lenox and Ryanne Mullen of Southwest Valley.
Paup and Lumbard played on the team coached by Harlan coach Elle Crees. Trailing Team Peterson 17-4 in the finals, Team Crees capped a 4-0 day by coming back for a 25-23 victory. Lewis Central’s Maddie Bergman was named Most Valuable Player.
Joining Bergman, Paup and Lumbard on the championship team were Delaney Ambrose (Underwood), Lainey DeVries (Red Oak), Quinn Grubbs (Exira-EHK), Madison Kjergaard (Harlan), Landry MIller (St. Albert) and Ella Myler (Missouri Valley).
Myler and Bergman were on the all-tournament team along with Treynor’s Kira Horton (Team Peterson), Sidney’s Emily Hutt (Team Peterson), Logan-Magnolia’s Kattie Troxel (Team Sparks) and Abraham Lincolns Jeena Carle (Team West).
Coaches in addition to Crees were Lisa Sparks of Southwest Valley, Beth Peterson of Woodbine, Liz Stein of Underwood, Taylor Sudmann of Fremont-Mills and Megan West of Missouri Valley.
The series had two pools of three with the top two from each pool advancing to lay in a championship bracket. A total of 50 seniors from southwest Iowa played in the event that raised nearly $1,600 on behalf of Lisa Brinkmeyer. The associate director of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union is battling cancer.
Lenox’s Douglas played for Team Sparks, Southwest Valley’s Mullen and Shields of Murray were on Team Sudmann and Emily Baker of Bedford played on Team West.
Round 1 — Team Crees 21, Team Sparks 13; Team Sudmann 21, Team Peterson 19.
Round 2 — Team Crees 21, Team Stein 14; Team Peterson 21, Team West 15.
Round 3 — Team Sparks 21, Team Stein 17; Team West 21, Team Sudmann 11.
Semifinals — Team Peterson 25, Team Sparks 22; Team Crees 25, Team West 23.
Consolation — Team Sudmann 25, Team Stein 18.
Championship — Team Crees 25, Team Peterson 23.
