Creston freshman team picks up first victory

The Panther (1-2) freshman team defeated Denison-Schleswig 30-7 on Friday.

Prior to their meeting with the Monarchs, Creston fell 36-16 at Winterset and 22-0 against Clarinda to open the season.

“It was great to get our first win of the year this year,” head coach Kevin Cooper said. “The kids have been progressing each game and in practice.”

Creston gained 265 yards of total offense, 221 of which were on the ground.

Jackson Pettegrew had nine rushes for 162 yards and quarterback Eric Chen had eight rushes for 59 yards including two touchdowns from the Monarch 1 and the D-S 12.

Chen also had a few aerial attacks against the Monarch, finishing the night with 44 yards on 6-of-10 passing and one touchdown. Seth Gordon hauled in the pass for an 18 yard scoring tally, his two other receptions tallied 19 yards.

Ethan Holiday had two receptions for nine yards and CT Stalker had a single catch for minus two yards.

Gordon was also productive on the defense, with six total tackles and a pair of pick sixes that were 40 and 42 yards, respectively.

Other D-S turnovers acquired by Panthers included Evan Abel who had a fumble recovery and Gunnar Martwick who recovered an offensive fumble, and carried it for 18 yards.

Tackle leaders for the Panthers include Kal Barber with eight, Maddix Leppla with four, Josh Buchanan with three and Lane Travis with two.

Creston’s freshman squad heads to Gilbert Friday for a 4:45 p.m. matchup with the Tigers. Gilbert is 0-1 and lost 14-0 to the similarly monikered Carroll Tigers on Sept. 2.

“We have to continue to improve each and every week,” Cooper said. “We are excited for another chance to play next week at Gilbert.”
