Senior night success

Panther golfers win home meet

Creston girls had a successful senior night home victory Monday over Atlantic and Clarinda, while the Panther boys were third in a triangular at Clarinda.

Maria Groumoutis and Kate Foglesong, two senior members of last year’s Panther state tournament team, were honored with their parents prior to Monday’s home meet. Groumoutis was meet medalist with a 48 as the Panthers shot 216 to win the meet.

Atlantic was second at 227 and Clarinda had a score of 245. Juniors Mikaela Downing and Saige Johnston each shot 53 for the Panthers to tie as runner-up medalists.

“It was good to get a win on senior night,” Creston assistant coach Steve Shantz said. “Atlantic is a pretty good team. They are better than their score indicated tonight. It was windy and cool but playing on our home course, our girls had played in those conditions before. Maria had a good overall day despite a triple (bogey) on three and a double on seven.”

Atlantic boys won by 13 strokes over the host Cardinals at Clarinda with a score of 155. Creston, at 201, was led by Garrett Frey’s 47.

“The boys are starting to get around the course as the scores are coming down,” said Creston coach Jon Thomson. “We understand the parts of the game we need to improve on. The biggest difference is the number of putts are coming down. We still have lessons to learn on course management and how to get out of trouble quickly.”
