Eagles have first wrestling meet

AFTON – The Eagles hosted AC/GC, Nodaway Valley and West Central Valley Thursday night in their first home quad of the season.

“We had a nice crowd and it got pretty loud in here,” first year East Union head coach James Erlbacher said. “It was cool to see, we had our Muscle Mat Club kids here and they got to watch too.”

East Union fell to AC/GC 39-36, Nodaway Valley 60-18 and West Central Valley 66-18.

“We got a lot of stuff we can improve on,” Erlbacher said. “An old coach of mine always said ‘You either win or you learn,’ and we’re going to be doing a lot of learning in the next few days.”

Hadyn Walters and Damon Hayes opened the night with pins of their own against AC/GC Chargers Jackson Pfrang and Blaise Tallman respectively.

Terrian Islas also had a pin against AC/GC’s Jonathon Martinez in 41 seconds.

East Union junior DJ Islas got the first of his three pins of the night in 2:27 against Tatum Bates.

Against the Nodaway Valley Wolverines, Damon Hayes and DJ Islas continued to find success as they pinned both of their opponents.

“Damon, Haydn and DJ, they wrestled hard and each ran, well DJ got all three of them, the other two ran into one kid that is really good and we’ll be catching up to him in the future,” Erlbacher said of the wrestlers that stood out Thursday night.

Both DJ and Terrian Islas got pins over their opponents from West Central Valley (Stuart).

Hadyn Walters ended his night how he started it, with a pin in the 138 pound weight class.

“IT’s just a matter of getting through the season which is a matter of working hard every day,” Erlbacher said. “Other than that, we have a lot of young kids that some got wins that I liked, others were close and not quite there, but I‘m excited for what I did see. The future looks good.”

The Eagles next hit the mats Dec. 4 at the Dan Hill Invitational per Track Wrestling.
