Creston football head to Clarinda to open season

At 7 p.m. tonight, the Panthers and Clarinda will meet in a Hawkeye 10 Conference battle. After taking part in the week zero scrimmage against Carlisle, head coach Brian Morrison is ready for regular season action.

“Offense had some explosive runs, the JV team competed like crazy and the freshman team scored about three touchdowns in 20 plays,” coach Morrison said of the team’s scrimmage.

The Cardinals feature a slew of playmakers on both sides of the ball.

“They’ve got a really good junior class and a really good sophomore class and they have some pretty dang good seniors,” Morrison said “I see them on film and I think they’re a favorite to make the dome from Western Iowa.”

Offensively, Panther fans will see a similar offensive style to Creston’s with it being a shotgun, multiple formation.

Clarinda’s coach is former athletic standout at Creston Collin Bevins, who redshirted at Iowa State in 2012 before transferring to Northwest Missouri State where he became an All-American.

“It’s neat that we’ve got a lot of people on our staff that are former Creston players that are coming back here to coach, they understand the culture and what we’ve built here,” Morrison said, “Seeing coaches like Collin Bevins and others that went on to coach, I’m excited for them.”

Eight of the 22 starters for Creston tonight are sophomores.

“We’re a young football team, but we’re a talented young football team,” Morrison said.
