SHENANDOAH — The Creston/O-M girls tennis squad placed third, after co-champions Glenwood and St. Albert, at the Hawkeye 10 Conference Tennis Tournament Monday.
The Panthers scored 18 team points, behind the top two teams, which scored 20 each.
Creston got the bulk of its scoring production from the No. 1 singles spot, where senior Maddie Frey finished as Hawkeye 10 champion, defeating Denison-Schleswig’s Paola Martinez 8-3 in the quarterfinals and Rhen Rolenc of Red Oak in the semifinals.
In the finals, Frey defeated St. Albert sophomore Landry Miller.
“Maddie did amazing today, she was so consistent in all three of her matches,” said Panther coach Kevin Cooper. “For her to go there today and win the Hawkeye 10 No. 1 singles competition is a great accomplishment. She just has to keep improving everyday and the sky is the limit for her this year.”
At No. 2 singles, Panther senior Karly Calvin won 8-5 over Red Oak’s Mercedes Ramirez before losing to D-S freshman Kiana Schulz 8-2 in the championship semifinals.
On the back side of the tournament, Calvin fell 8-4 to Lewis Central’s Katie Rodenburg.
In No. 1 doubles play, the pair of Sam Dunphy and Morgan Driskell went 0-2 on the day.
At No. 2 doubles, Halle Evans and Caitlin Bruce teamed up to place fourth. They beat Shenandoah duo Erin Baldwin and Vesta Bopp 8-5 before dropping an 8-3 match to Kuemper’s Alyssa Brant and Vanessa Breedlove. Red Oak’s pair of Brooklyn Johnson and Anna Grizzard beat Evans/Bruce 8-1 for third.
