Area wrestling roundup: forfeits hurt Nodaway Valley in return to action

LEON – Nodaway Valley finished its first dual back from the winter break 0-3, finishing fourth at the Central Decatur duals Saturday.

The Wolverines fell in all three duals, losing to Central Decatur 30-24, Southeast Warren/Melcher-Dallas 47-27 and Moberly (Mo.) 48-24.

Nodaway Valley gave up three forfeit victories to Central Decatur, accounting for 18 points. There were double forfeits at 106, 113, 182, 220 and 285. Ben Breheny (126) and Caelen DeVault (170) were the two Wolverine wrestlers to take a win in competed matches. Each scored a pin to account for the wins.

Against Southeast Warren/Melcher-Dallas, Nodaway Valley forfeited five matches for 30 points.

Class 1A No. 8 120 Elliot Cooney scored a pin in 20 seconds. Breheny and Zackery Gebbie (132) followed with pins of their own at 2:25 and 3:37, respectively. At 160, Brandon Raasch scored a second-period pin, and DeVault won a 14-3 major decision.

Taking on Moberly, Nodaway Valley scored four wins in the dual.

Cooney and Breheny each scored a pin in the second and first period, respectively. Jaxon Christensen (138) scored a second-period pin at 3:05, and DeVault finished his day with a pin at 1:54.
