John F. Smith III, 35, of San Jose, California, was taken into custody at 10:02 a.m. Feb. 4, at the Creston Amtrak Depot on the charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver - marijuana, failure to affix tax stamp and possession of a controlled substance - marijuana, first offense and an out-of-state warrant.

According to Creston Police reports, the police department was notified by a federal agency of a male who was on an eastbound Amtrak who had a fully extraditable warrant out of California, who would be going through Creston. At approximately 6:54 a.m. officers boarded the train with staff and located the male, identified as Smith, and took him into custody. As he was leaving the train, Smith asked to get his property and officers retrieved the items Smith identified as his. In his property, Smith had a marijuana bong, other drug paraphernalia and 74 grams of a green leafy substance, identified as marijuana.

Smith was transported to the Union County Jail and held on $11,300 cash or surety bond for local charges and without bond for the out-of-state warrant.

Monica N. Johnston, 26, of Creston, was taken into custody 1:42 a.m. Feb. 5, at Lucas and Livingston streets on the charge of driving while suspended.

According to a Creston Police report, at approximately 1:32 a.m. Johnston was observed to be the driver of a 2006 Honda Pilot traveling on Lucas Street. Johnston has a suspended license.

Johnston was cited and released on a summons to appear.
