Kayla Hoffman, 36, of Des Moines, and Justin Dahm, 36, of Ankeny, were taken into custody Dec. 1, at Howard and Jarvis streets on the charges of possession of a controlled substance, second offense and possession of drug paraphernalia. Hoffman was additionally charged with unlawful possession of prescription drugs. Dahm was also cited for driving while suspended, no proof of insurance and operating a non-registered vehicle.
According to a Union County report, at approximately 12:09 p.m. deputies observed Dahm driving a 2006 Dodge Durango in an alley. Dahm stopped the Durango in the middle of the alley and exited out of the driver’s seat. Dahm is known to have a suspended license.
A traffic stop was conducted and contact was made with Dahm and his passenger, identified as Hoffman. Dahm was unable to provide identification, registration or insurance information.
A K9 arrived and was deployed for a free air sniff. The K9 gave a positive alert on the vehicle. Prior to conducting a search, Dahm admitted to having a hypodermic needle in the vehicle. A probable cause search was then conducted and several used needles, a loaded needle, a crystalline substance, prescription drugs, marijuana and other paraphernalia were located in the Durango. All items were found in both Hoffman’s and Dahm’s belongings. Both have prior convictions for possessing controlled substances.
Dahm took ownership of the crystalline substance and needles but said the pills were not his. Two prescription bottles of trazodone not prescribed to Hoffman or Dahm were found. The marijuana and a loaded marijuana pipe were found in a bag also containing mail belonging to Hoffman.
Dahm was transported to the Union County Jail and held on $2,000 cash or surety bond. Hoffman was transported to the Adams County Jail and held on $2,000 cash or surety bond.
