Multiple headstones were damaged in a one-vehicle accident Thursday at the Cromwell Cemetery.
According to a Union County report, at approximately 12:45 p.m. deputies stopped a 2000 Chevrolet S10 at McKinley and Adams streets after it was reported as being driven by a possible intoxicated driver. The driver, James R. Brown, 68, of Corning, immediately opened the driver’s door and became sick. Brown was disoriented and confused. The truck appeared to have been involved in a recent collision.
Further investigation determined the accident took place at 180th Street and Monroe Avenue by the Cromwell Cemetery. The S10 was eastbound on 180th Street and went straight through a stop sign at the T-intersection. It then collided with a guardrail, went through the ditch, a plastic fence and into the cemetery where it hit several headstones. Vehicle parts, including the front license plate were found in the cemetery.
EMS transported Brown by ambulance to Greater Regional Health for care. It is believed he suffered a medical incident contributing to the accident.
Damage to the S10 was estimated at $2,500. Damages to the guardrail and sign post were estimated at $2,500 and damages to the fence and headstones were estimated at $5,000. The Union County Sheriff’s Office notified all property owners of damages.
