Des Moines man dead in Clarke Co. accident

A Des Moines man is dead after a one-vehicle accident in Clarke County early Friday afternoon.

According to an Iowa State Patrol report, at approximately 12:58 p.m. a 2014 Harley Davidson Street Glide, driven by James P. Qualls, 38, of Des Moines, was northbound on Interstate 35 when the Harley left the roadway after Qualls took exit 33. Qualls lost control of the Harley which overturned, struck a sign post and threw Qualls from the motorcycle into the ditch. The Harley rolled down an embankment before coming to rest in a ditch.

Witnesses said Qualls had passed multiple vehicles at a very high rate of speed before attempting to exit the interstate.

Qualls was transported to the Clarke County Hospital by EMS where he was pronounced deceased.
