'A time for choosing'

Mike Lang

I just watched a video of Ronald Reagan presenting his famous “A Time for Choosing” speech on behalf of Barry Goldwater in 1964. Ronald Reagan presented many thoughts about how the Federal Government bureaucracy was destroying our way of life. I would like to add some more reasons that this also is “A Time for Choosing.”

Thursday, Oct. 24, has been set aside as United Nations Day. This day has been set aside to commemorate the founding of the United Nations.

Following the end of World War II, the victorious nations gathered to establish an organization designed to prevent another disaster like the one just concluded. The result was the “United Nations.”

Just think of the vast number of regional military conflicts since that time. The list is nearly endless. Some of the ones that come to mind include: The Korean conflict, the Vietnamese war fought first by the French, then the United States. There have been an almost endless number of conflicts in Africa. There were the many conflicts in the former Yugoslavia and surrounding area.

We have seen several military conflicts in the Near-East. Some of these include the conflict between Israel and its surrounding Arab and Muslim nations. There have been the conflicts between Russia and several nations surrounding it.

There have been many disastrous conflicts in the India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka area as well.

Cuba, Nicaragua and other Central and South American nations have also seen violent conflict.

I think if there had been assigned a score card to keep track of the United Nations success at preventing conflict, it would be a joke. There has been an almost continuous military conflict somewhere in the world since shortly after the conclusion of World War II. The United Nations has been involved, either directly or indirectly, in many of these and other violent conflicts.

The current facade of the United Nations is to portray itself as a group (or club) of nations gathered together to prevent war, discuss differences, eliminate poverty and bring peace and harmony to the world. It has been pretty unsuccessful in these tasks.

In addition to these tasks, the United Nations has dabbled in climate control, energy policy and the World Health Organization (WHO). None of these projects have performed well. The most that can be said is that all of this seems to lead to more central control of our lives. None of this is in agreement with the founding documents of our United States of America, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States.

How does all this relate to Ronald Reagan’s speech? Decisions made by the United Nations have a direct impact on the United States.

Many of the military conflicts with United Nations participation have caused the death of American military personnel.

The so-called “climate change” activities of the United Nations have impacted life style and the cost of living in the United States. We have had little or no control over these events.

The quest for sustainable development has artificially caused shortages of important commodities and has vastly increased the cost of those and others.

The United Nations is now planning how to implement a “global governance” system. This would totally destroy our independence. I remember that our nation once fought a war to establish our independence. We can’t allow the United Nations to steal it from us!

The most amazing part of all this is that the United States supplies more funding for the United Nations than any other nation. We currently provide in excess of 22% of the entire United Nations budget.

In Ronald Reagans words, it is a “Time for Choosing”. We should choose to either substantially reduce the power and authority of the United Nations, or we should choose to resign from participation. We must choose to stop funding our own decline.

We should choose to either reform the United Nations by the next United Nations Day, Oct. 24, 2025, or choose to leave the organization altogether. It is currently of no value to the United States of America.
