Barbara Lou Grubbs was born Friday, March 27, 1953, to LaVerne and Geraldine Gem (Jones) Grubbs in Perry. For her first nine years of schooling she attended Central Dallas Schools in Minburn. Then the family moved to a farm in the Zion area where she graduated with honors from the Orient-Macksburg School. She next attended Southwestern Community College where she graduated with an Associate of Arts degree. While at SWCC, she was a member of the honor society and received the gold and silver pins. She continued her education at Northwest Missouri State University where she graduated with highest honors in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education.

In fall 1975, Barb began her 33 years of teaching in the Carson-Macedonia/Riverside School District as an elementary remedial reading teacher. Over the years she also taught middle school reading, spelling and language arts. She also served as the middle school librarian for many years. Barb helped many students learn and enjoy reading.

Barb was a private person, but also very giving. While teaching in Carson she would drive back to Creston on long weekends and during summer breaks to volunteer at Overall Travel. After her retirement in 2008, Barb had more time for hobbies and pastimes. She faithfully walked 2.5 miles daily when the weather permitted. She also loved to crotchet. Some of the items she made were potholders, tiny stockings (Iowa, Iowa State, Christmas) and scarves by the boxful to donate to the homeless. Another favorite pastime was baking goodies like cakes, brownies, banana breads, cheesecakes, candy and Chex-mix, which she made frequently for family and friends. During her free time, she was a prolific writer of poetry and even had some poems published. She was very generous of her time, talents and money.

Barb is survived by her sister, Sandra Sue (Jerry) White of Creston; brother Gary Andrew Grubbs of Creston; nephews, Kevin White and Curtis White (Jamie Breece and her children, Stormy and Dakota), all of Van Meter.

She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents, Lloyd and Maragaret Jones and (James) Allen and Clara Grubbs; along with all of her aunts, uncles and cousins, Jolene Grubbs, Roy Grubbs and Lori Jones. She was loved by many and will be dearly missed.
