Sandra “Sandy” Winn, 77, of Afton, died Feb. 9, 2025, at Care Initiatives in Creston. A Memorial Celebration of Life lunch and gathering will be Feb 15, at Afton United Methodist Fellowship Hall. In line with Sandy’s love for food and friends, the family will have a remembrance from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and lunch from 12 to 1 p.m., followed by cards and reminiscing. Pastor Al Rusk will share a remembrance. Services will be livestreamed by accessing a link on her obituary page. Private family burial will be in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Afton.

Sandra Joy (King) Winn was born Aug. 9, 1947, to Harvey Eugene “Gene” King and Edna Francine (McClure) King in Creston. She graduated from East Union High School in 1966. She started her career working for “Look Magazine” in Des Moines, coming back to Mount Ayr in 1972. On Jan. 15, 1972, she was united in marriage to Glenn Lewis Winn in Mount Ayr.
Sandy worked at the library at Mount Ayr from 1977 to 1987, where she became head librarian. Around 1990, she opened and ran Overall Travel, Inc., which she operated until the internet took over. They lived in Mount Ayr until 1997, when they returned to Afton to farm on her husband’s family farm. After the travel business, she served as a paraeducator at East Union schools and then at Creston schools and finished her career as a registration clerk for Greater Regional Health in Creston.
Sandy was always willing to jump in a vehicle and head out on a trip and enjoyed many adventures over the past 20 years with daughter Karla and cousins Marla and Jordan. She also enjoyed her monthly card playing days over the last couple of years with dear friends from Des Moines.
Survivors include her children, Karla (Eric) Alford of Creston; David (Alicia) Winn of Haslet, Texas, Darin (Michele) Winn of South Lake, Texas, and Dianne (Ken) Harden of Trophy Club, Texas; her cat, Grayson, who she loved dearly; honorary daughter, Marla (Bernard) Crawford of Mount Ayr; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson and many grandkids who adopted her as “Grandma Sandy,” which she loved.
Sandy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glenn in 2008; her in-laws, Carlos H. Winn and Marjorie Doleen Winn.
