Mary Hagen, 69, of Afton, died Jan. 25, 2025, at Greater Regional Health in Creston.

Mary Hagen, 69, of Afton, died Jan. 25, 2025, at Greater Regional Health in Creston. Celebration of Life Services will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, at Powers Funeral Home in Afton. Tom Hagen will emcee the event. Services will be livestreamed at a link found under her obituary on the funeral home’s website. Open visitation with the family receiving friends will be 10:30-11:30 a.m., service time, Jan. 29, at Powers Funeral Home in Afton.

Mary Anne Hagen was born Feb. 14, 1955, to LuDell Hagen and Bess Evelyn (Blakely) Hagen in Des Moines. She graduated from East Union High School in 1973.

In 1973, she was united in marriage to Chuck Erskine in Afton. To this union a daughter, Sara, was born. Mary Anne and Chuck later divorced.

Throughout her life Mary Anne was never afraid of a challenge or of trying something new and was considered a “jack-of-all-trades.” Thus, she excelled in numerous different careers including nurse’s aide, cosmetology, restaurant management, construction, babysitting and business ownership.

In 1993 she was united in marriage to John Holtry, they later divorced.

Mary Anne was always up for an adventure living in Afton, Nebraska, and Missouri. Mary Anne returned permanently to Afton in 2005.

She was an active member of the Eagles and bowling leagues in her earlier years. Mary Anne enjoyed a good party, and her quick wit kept everyone on their toes. She loved spending time with family and friends, particularly houseboat trips in the summers and fishing with her grandsons.

Mary Anne is survived by one daughter, Sara (Terry) Bickford of Shannon City; two grandchildren, Cooper Sterling and Hunter Bickford; two sisters, Suzy (Butch) Woods and Betty Hagen, both of Afton; three brothers: Michael (Kimberly) Hagen of Afton, Johnny (Sandie) Hagen of Claremore, Oklahoma, and Tommy (Wanda) Hagen of Winterset, along with many nieces and nephews.

Mary Anne was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Sally Hagen and Lorene Hart and four brothers: Larry, Lynn, Joe and Kenneth Hagen.
