Dan Lee Weigel was born Feb. 28, 1945, to Charles Vincent Weigel and Cora Elizabeth (Robinet) Weigel in Des Moines. His first years were spent around the Polk City area until his parents purchased a farm in Ellston in 1950. He attended school in Ellston and later attended school to become a butcher in Toledo, Ohio. Dan served his country as a part of the United States Army from September 1965 until September 1967, and was deployed for a tour in Vietnam.
In 1968, Dan was united in marriage to Pamella Susan (Briner) in Mount Ayr. The couple were blessed with two children, Dan Jr. and Bobbi Jo. They settled in Des Moines where he worked as a butcher before returning to Mount Ayr, where he worked as a farmhand. Later, they moved to Diagonal, and he worked for D.A. Jennings doing dirt work and other road construction projects. They also lived in Ellston and back in Des Moines where he built starters for Snodgrass and later worked for Des Moines Steel.
Dan’s career direction changed and he began working as a police officer while they lived in Melcher Dallas and his goal was to become a part of the state patrol. He was working toward that goal and was attending the academy when he aggravated an old injury which prevented him from completing that goal. For a brief time he worked as a plumber before he began working in the career he loved as an over-the-road truck driver. During this time, the family moved to New Virginia, then to a farm near Orient and to Creston in 2021, when he retired.
He enjoyed racing cars both on dirt tracks and at the drag strip in Eddyville. He was also an avid ham radio operator and had the skill and ability to build his own radio. He loved sharing this hobby with others as he communicated with people all over the world. Dan was a member of the American Legion in both New Virginia and later in Creston.
Dan is survived by his wife, Pamella Weigel of Creston; his children, Dan Weigel Jr. of Creston and Bobbi Jo (Randy) of Florence, Texas; one sister, Kathy (Terry) Baker of Windsor, Colorado; two grandchildren, Samantha (Chad) Ellis of Florence, Texas, and Luke (Shanna) Watts of Florence, Texas; 10 great-grandchildren: Dixie, Cole, Eli, Porter, Corbin and Walker Ellis and Jordan, William, Bradley and Luke Jr. Watts; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Charles, Paul, Richard and Tom Weigel and his sister, Carol Wolfe.
