Jayson Scott Spurr, son of Ronald E. Spurr and Janice A. (Shawler) Spurr, was born July 29, 1977, in Creston. He graduated from Creston High School in 1996, from Southwestern Community College in 1998 and earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal science while in the Air Force. On Dec. 12, 1998, Jayson married Shanna Lynn Swietlik in Creston. Jay committed to the Air Force, and they moved to where he was stationed in Colorado Springs in 1998.

He worked security forces and served three tours of duty in Saudia Arabia as well as classified locations. Jay was discharged after serving eight years of service. They moved to Norwalk in 2006. Jay began working with the Norwalk Police Department in 2008, continuing to work through his recent battle with pancreatic cancer.

Jay loved to spend time outside doing various activities. His passion to hunt was fulfilled every December during deer season. Jayson, his son, brothers, nephews, dad and family friends endured the elements and each other to fill their tags. Bow hunting deer kept him busy between shotgun seasons. He also enjoyed hunting rams in Texas and hogs in Oklahoma. He was always looking forward to the next hunting trip. Fishing was another sport he enjoyed with his family and would go whenever he had the chance. Jay’s favorite hunting experience was his trip to Canada with his brothers, one nephew and family friends. He shot his first black bear, had it mounted and proudly displayed in their home.

Jay’s greatest love was his family. He loved Shanna, Dylan and Haylie with his whole heart. Jay always made time for their activities, even though his work schedule often presented challenges. Football games, baseball games, basketball, choir and tennis were at the top of his list. The family vacations, large family gatherings for holidays and “just because” were full of laughs, bad jokes and many good memories.

He attended the Norwalk United Methodist Church, was active with the DARE Association and Special Olympics of Iowa as the Iowa Law Enforcement Torch Run assistant director. Jay was also a board member of the Helping Heroes Foundation and the precision driving Instructor for ILEA.

Jay is survived by his wife, Shanna Spurr of Norwalk; son, Dylan Scott Spurr and daughter, Haylie Lynn Spurr, both of Norwalk; his mother, Jan Spurr of Creston; parents-in-law, Steven and Sandra Swietlik of Tingley; two brothers, Randy (Cindy) Spurr of Norwalk and Rick (Kathy) Spurr of Atlantic; a brother-in-law, Jeremiah (Allie) Swietlik of Mount Ayr; a sister-in-law, Jessica Swietlik of Des Moines and many other extended family members.

Jay was preceded in death by his father, Ron Spurr and his grandparents, Lucille and Orville Shawler and Edith and Edward Spurr.
