John Shinkle, 84, of rural Orient, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2023, at MercyOne Medical Center in downtown Des Moines. A Celebration of Life service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12 at Powers Funeral Home in Creston. Full military honors will be provided by the Theodore J. Martins V.F.W. Post 1797. Services will be livestreamed. Burial will be in Carl Cemetery in Carl. Open visitation will be from 2 – 7 p.m., with family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11 at Powers Funeral Home in Creston.

John Edward Shinkle, was born Jan. 29, 1939, the son of Kenneth Lee and Grace Mae (Brown) Shinkle, in Adair County. John and his family moved onto their family farm when John was young. As a kid he would help with the farm and field chores for several farmers. John attended Richland Consolidated Schools where he graduated with the class of 1958. Later, John would serve in the Army Reserve of Iowa.

John was united in marriage to Marquetta “Marky” Williams. The two later divorced. On July 24, 1983, he was united in marriage to Dixie Lea (Huddleson) Williams in Carl. From this union, John gained two children – David Lee and Debora Lynn. For many years, John worked doing construction in the Orient area. He helped build the Methodist Church in Greenfield and the Ford Garage in Creston.

Until his retirement in 2001, he worked at Fansteel-Wellman Dynamics after working there for 36 years. He was a member of the Orient United Methodist Church and the Williamson American Legion.

Surviving John is his wife, Dixie Shinkle of Orient; her children, David (Melissa) Williams and Debora Williams, both of Creston; a grandson, Dustin Williams of Creston; his sister, Donna (Jim) Phillips of Anita; a brother in-law, Steve Conley of Maryville, Missouri; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents; a brother, Tom Shinkle; a sister, Laurel “Lolly” Conley; a nephew, Mike Williamson; brother in-law, Harry “Casey” Huddleson; along with his aunts and uncles.
