A devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and proud veteran, Carl Norman Smith, passed away peacefully at the age of 97 on Saturday, May 13, 2023, in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Predeceased by his cherished wife, Marjorie Ann Dunn and his son, Larry Wayne Smith, he is lovingly remembered by his three daughters, Lu Ann Smith (Tom) Lacy, Patricia (Michael) Brooks (Michael) and Jody Melchor. He is deeply missed by his eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Norm was born Feb. 14, 1926, to Thomas Smith and Evelyn Scott in Orient. He was a proud fourth-generation American and answered the call and joined the US Navy in 1943, serving with the Motor Torpedo Boat (MTB) Squadron, 7th Fleet in the South Pacific.
Upon his return from the war, Norm obtained a degree from University of Iowa and spent his career in the insurance industry until his retirement. He loved to travel with Marjorie and he loved maps. If he wasn’t rolling around on the floor playing with his grandkids, he would be sitting for hours at the kitchen table playing cribbage, doing jigsaw puzzles or going over maps with his children.
A private gathering will be held with immediate family to reminisce the joys we had with Norm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to PT Boats Inc. of Germantown TN, an organization that keeps the memories of the Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron alive. Please donate at ptboats.org
