John R. Clayton

John Clayton, 62, of Creston, died Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at his home in Creston. Celebration of Life Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 6 at Powers Funeral Home in Creston. Pastor Tim Maxa will officiate. Services will be livestreamed. Private burial will be at a later date in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation with family receiving friends will be 10-11 a.m. Saturday, prior to service.

John Richard Clayton was born Jan. 26, 1961, to James Richard Clayton and Mary Elizabeth (Foreman) Clayton in Red Oak. He was raised in Creston and attended Creston High School, graduating with the class of 1979. He also studied at Lincoln Tech for two years, receiving his AA.

John worked at Easters, Davis Equipment in Des Moines, Farmers Co-op in Creston, H&F Construction, Kingston Forestry planting trees around the country and Henningson Construction in Atlantic. He later drove a semi for various companies, worked for Creston American Concrete, the Afton Co-op and worked part-time in Fareway’s meat department. John loved doing activities with his nieces and nephews. His dogs Sandy, Hope, Bubba, Shirley and Buck were like family.

Survivors include his mother, Mary Clayton of Creston; three brothers, Duane (Lori) Clayton of Creston, Alan (Wendy) Clayton of Sharpsburg; Willie (Janelle) Clayton of Creston; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father James Clayton, numerous aunts and uncles.
