Barbara “Barb” Jean (Nicola) Veitz was born Dec. 29, 1929, the daughter of Robert Edward and Mamie Evelyn (Carter) Nicola in Council Bluffs. Barb met the love of her life “Al” Veitz, and they were united in marriage on Feb. 3, 1952, in Council Bluffs.

Over a short time, they lived in Independence, Missouri, and Sedalia, Missouri, then became lifelong residents of Creston. Barb and Al were blessed with two sons, Mike and Gary.

Barb worked as the bookkeeper of Innovative Industries for 23 years before retiring in 1993 and enjoyed many hobbies. Barb loved playing cards, gardening and embroidery. She relished spending time with her grandchildren, her pride and joy. She was their partner in crime and fiercest ally.

Barb enjoyed baking and cooking and used to make wedding cakes, her famous valentine cakes and Easter Bunny Cakes with Jeff and Lindsey. Barb and Al enjoyed having family and friends over; the more the merrier. “Pheasant Season” weekend was a favorite family tradition.

Barb was a member of the First Christian Church in Creston. She also was a member of the Afton Auxiliary, Eagles Lodge and Elks Lodge of Creston.

Barbara is survived by her son, Michael (Jill) Veitz of Onalaska, Wisconsin; daughter-in-law, Deb Veitz of Creston, grandchildren, Jeff (Jenny) Veitz of Creston and Lindsey Veitz of Grimes; two great-grandchildren, Payton and Riley Veitz and brother-in-law Eldon Hansen of Fremont, Nebraska.

Barb is preceded in death by her husband Al Veitz; her son Gary Veitz; her parents, Robert and Mamie Nicola and sisters, Betty Lou (Red) Kady, Beverly (Leonard) Hoffman and Ida May Hansen.

We thank the nurses of Creston Specialty Care Center and the doctors who attended to her.
