Martha Jordan

Martha Jordan, 77, of Greenfield, formerly of Creston, died Monday, Aug. 15, 2022, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. A Celebration of life visitation will be held 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, at Eagles Lodge in Creston.

Martha May (Layton) Jordan was born July 30, 1945, the daughter of Vena Irene (Collins) Layton and Harry Richard Layton in Lafayette, Indiana. She was educated in Logansport High School in Indiana.

Martha worked as an active mother and homemaker. She also worked at St. Anthony’s Care Center in Lafayette in the housekeeping department. Moving to Creston in February 1994, she worked at Crest Haven Care Centre and Uptown Laundromat. Martha then moved to Greenfield in 2019.

Martha is survived by her six children: Louis Bender of Des Moines, Teresa (David) Doty of Crawfordsville, Indiana, Mark Bender of Kokomo, Indiana, Melissa Ross of Greenfield, Mary Beth Bender of Crawfordsville, Indiana, and Larry Jordan of Hartsville, Tennessee; three sisters: Ann Lockard of Lafayette, Indiana, Rochelle Wendling of Walton, Indiana, and Darla Biddle of North Fort Meyers, Florida; 16 grandchildren: Clarissa, Matthew and Samantha Bender, Rhea and Hudson Doty, Hannah, Priscilla, Brooklyn and Luke Bender, Ashley Davis, Tiffany Ross Hoffman, Michelle Ross Bird, Heaven, Jubilee, Lilly and Aiden Jordan and many great grandchildren.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather Donald Beaver; two brothers William “Chum” Layton and Dennis Layton; sister Rachelle Woodward; great-grandson James Buchanan; two nephews Rodney McGuire and Tommy Harth and two nieces Leticia Eastham and Lisa Hutchison.
