Ronald Glee Jones, 85, of Afton, died Wednesday, April 27, 2022, at Clearview Home in Mount Ayr. Celebration of life services will be 10 a.m. Monday, May 2, at Powers Funeral Home in Afton. Pastor Al Rusk will officiate. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Shannon City. Open visitation will be 12 - 5 p.m. Sunday, May 1, with family receiving friends 2 - 5 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home in Afton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are to the Shannon City Community Church, Afton Volunteer Fire Department and East Union Dollars for Scholars. Online condolences may be made at www.powersfh.com.
Ronald Glee Jones, born Dec. 2, 1936, at his grandparents’ home half mile east of Shannon City, the son of Bernadine (Hoffman) and Glee Jones. Ron attended Harmony Country school until third grade, then Shannon City Community School, graduating high school in 1954. Ron attended college at Tarkio, Missouri, for one year; transferred to Northwest Missouri State University and graduated in 1958. He earned a B.S. degree in secondary education with a major in industrial education and a minor in physical education.
On Jan. 19, 1958, Ron married his high school sweetheart, Lucille Woldruff. Ron began his teaching career at Richland Township school in Adair County, where he taught and coached for two years then East Union in 1960. Ron taught and coached at East Union for 38 years, retiring in 1998. He also drove a school bus for 12 years.
He was a member of the Shannon City Community Church, Afton United Methodist Church, NEA, ISEA, EUTA, ITEA, He was a 34 year member of the Afton Volunteer Fire Department, serving nine years as fire chief. Ron was also a charter member of the Afton Lions Club. Ron and Lucille enjoyed camping at the Iowa State Fair, woodworking, fishing, hunting, going to the casino and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include his two children, Jan (Randy) Pettit of Afton, Doug (Karen) Jones of Afton; three grandchildren: Alex (Taylor) Pettit of Afton, Sara Pettit of Afton and Trevor Jones of Afton; four great-grandchildren, Blaine, Quinn, Dax and Eli Pettit; brother Ted (Kate) Jones of Shannon City and sister-in-law, Marcia Jones of Winterset.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lucille Jones in 2018, brother Richard Jones, sister-in-law Phyllis (Richard) Buck and niece Tiffani Braman.
