Adah Joan Cheers was born March 26, 1932, to Frank Robert Cheers and Hannah M. (Gray) Cheers in Thayer, Iowa. Joan passed peacefully, March 19 at Greater Regional EveryStep Hospice House in Creston, Iowa, just one week from her 90th birthday.
Celebration of Life Memorial Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 26, 2022, at Powers Funeral Home 601 New York Ave. in Creston. Joan’s granddaughter Beth Loomis and nephew Eric Nurnberg will officiate. Services will be livestreamed with the link available at www.powersfh.com under the obituary in the events section. Burial will be held at Greenlawn Cemetery in Afton, Iowa.
Open visitation will be 2 p.m. -7 p.m. Friday, with family receiving friends from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home in Creston. Memorials are kindly suggested to the Union County Fair and the Iowa 4-H Foundation. Online condolences can be made at www.powersfh.com.
She attended school in Thayer and Arispe. On July 4, 1949, she married Wayne N. Hartsook in Osceola, Iowa. They were married for 69 years and they were parents to Joyce (Fred) Franklin, Gary (Polly) Hartsook, Carol (Dave Wagner) Higgason, Larry (Denise) Hartsook, Lori (John) Morris, Holly (Roger) Mace and Diane (Jeff) Sorrells.
Joan loved her 21 grandchildren: Amy (Kyle) Edmonds of Nevada, Iowa; Jay (Heather) Franklin of Murray, Alyssa (James Ibbotson) Franklin of Carbondale, Colorado. Jeff (Gina) Hartsook of Madrid, Iowa, Greg (Christa) Hartsook of Ames, Iowa, Traci (Dennis) of St. Joseph, Missouri, Jill (Rick) Howard of Ankeny, Iowa. Beth (Joel) Loomis of Grinnell, Iowa, Josh (Amy) Higgason of Boston, Massachusetts, Jennifer (Brian) Best of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Casey (Sabrina Larson) Morris of Cambridge, Minnestoa, Cristen (Chris) Thomas of Bristow, Oklahoma, Megan (Jake) Urban of Archer, Nebraska, Bryant (Dusty) Eaton of Rice, Texas, Brandon Eaton of Creston, Dan (Callie) Mace of Grand Island, Nebraska, Jessica Mace of Hastings, Nebraska, Adam (Brittany) Missi of Creston, Jake (Kat) Missi of Creston, Taylor Sorrells of Des Moines, Iowa, and Tiffanie (Brandon) Smith of Opelika, Alabama.
And she really loved her 32 great-grandchildren and they loved her more.
Also surviving are siblings: Ferne Abell of Creston, Jeannie Seifkas of Indianola, Iowa, Terry (Marsha) Cheers of Afton and Merry (Jerry) Nurnberg of Creston.
Through the years with the kids and grandkids, Wayne and Joan were involved in the Union County Fair and endless 4-H and FFA events.
Joan was a wonderful cook and baked hundreds of wedding cakes.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Wayne Hartsook, her in-laws, Ralph and Elsie Hartsook, brother Robert Cheers, grandson Vincent Franklin and great-grandson Weston Eaton.
