Cliff Sheriff

Clifford Eugene Sheriff was born on June 3, 1939, the son of Orlie and Gertrude (Brown) Sheriff in Union Township.  He passed away on Sunday, Feb. 6, 2022 at the Greenfield Rehabilitation & Health Care Center at the age of 82.

His mother got $5 off her bill for naming him after Dr. Eugene Tinsman.  He lived in Adair County all his life in the Hebron and Zion area. He went to school at Grand River Center then to Zion in the fifth grade and graduated in 1957 as valedictorian.  He walked to country school often hunting on the way.  He drove a school bus his junior and senior years while at Zion.

He was united in marriage to Eileen Louise Orr on Dec. 16, 1961, during an ice storm.  To this union and daughters were born: Kristy, Jody and Heidi.  He designed their home that was built in 1975.

He farmed, was in seed sales and sales management with Moews for 40 years which he dearly loved.  He was awarded the top seed dealer in Iowa; top seed manager in 13 Midwest states and lastly top district sales manager of a national seed company.  He was active in the Hebron Church, started MYF before he was old enough according to the rules.  He loved the ice cream socials, hayrides, family nights, box suppers, cake walks and all the spiritual events that remained with him all of his life.

He also loved his new vehicles, to travel, cook, flowers, eat at nice places, hunt deer and turkey and enjoyed the outdoors and nature.  Even in the cold and snow he would go sledding, packing down the path to make it fast and even setting hay bales on fire to light the way down.

Special Olympics was an important part of his life.  He loved helping Jody and other Adair County Aces athletes.  He also enjoyed playing cards with the card party group for over 50 years. He was very active in the community as a church officer, township trustee and Adair County Supervisor.

In his notes he left us, he said he felt blessed being a husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle.  He also said he was blessed with living in a fantastic community with many friends and the health to live things out.

Cliff is survived by his wife of 60 years Eileen; three daughters, Kristy Sheriff of Corydon, Jody Sheriff of Greenfield and Heidi Crawford (Mark) of Creston; three grandsons, Cole Crawford of Corydon, Cody Crawford (fiancé Hannah Hood) of Creston and Seth Sheriff of Corydon; two brothers, Wendell Sheriff of Greenfield and Bruce Sheriff (Gerry) of Greenfield; cousins, nieces, nephews and many great friends.
