Peggy Ann (Stevens) Van Pelt, daughter of Cyrus Lee Stevens and Roberta (Barks) Stevens, was born on Aug. 15, 1936, in Creston. Peggy attended the Creston Community Schools and graduated from Creston High School. Following her graduation, Peggy completed a six-month course at a government school in Omaha for flight training with the Navy. She then moved to Washington D.C. and worked briefly at the United States Pentagon.
After she returned to Creston, Peggy was united in marriage to Larry Van Pelt. From this union, two sons were born. They later divorced. Peggy worked briefly for Coca-Cola, then took a job as office manager with the Creston Chamber of Commerce. She held this position for 53 years and retired in 2017.
Peggy will be remembered for her devotion to her family and friends. She loved spending time with family, and enjoyed every minute with her grandchildren and great-granddaughter Addie. She cared deeply for the city of Creston and devoted much time to organizing community events through the Chamber. A favorite time of year for her was the Fourth of July celebration. She spent many hours organizing the parade, talent show and fireworks. She also loved setting up for Christmas at the Depot. A friend and former co-worker stated, “we had many laughs, and we made a difference.” Peggy devoted countless hours to making Creston a better place.
Peggy is survived by her sons Kenny (Kathy) Van Pelt of Ames, Ia., and Kelly (Kristie) Van Pelt of Camdenton, Missouri; step-son Tom (Mavis) Van Pelt of Afton; grandchildren Ryan Van Pelt, Megan (Jackson) Johnson, Katie (Adam) Frits and Brandon Van Pelt; and great-granddaughter Addie Frits.
