Susan Diane Schaefer, 71, of Mount Ayr, passed away Jan. 21, 2022.

Susan was born June 3, 1950, to Glenn and Helen (Manchester) Campbell. She grew up on a farm south of Mount Ayr, Iowa, with two brothers, Gary Leroy and Dennis Glenn, and one sister Sheryl Ann.

Susan married Gerald Lee Schaefer on March 5, 1966. The couple lived in California while Jerry was in the Navy. To this union was born a son, Derald Dean, and two daughters Dana Danelle and Danette DeAnn.

In 1974, the family returned to Iowa. Over the years, the family lived on two different farms north of Diagonal. In 1988, the couple moved to their current home in Creston.

Susan worked various office jobs in Creston and Des Moines before retiring and spending time traveling with Jerry.

Susan found joy in painting and in reading. She was a member of a book club in Des Moines and was attempting to write her own novel.

Susan had a kind heart and a loving smile. Her love for her family was grand and she enjoyed giving and receiving hugs from them all.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents; mother and father-in-law Maxine and Lowell Schaefer; sister-in-law Donna Mae Campbell.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband Jerry Schaefer of Creston, Iowa; children Derald (Brenda) of Diagonal, Iowa, Dana (Warren Evans) Bridgewater, Iowa, Danette (Richard Hoffman) of Reinbeck, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; brothers Gary (Jean Campbell) of Leon, Iowa, and Dennis Campbell of Mount Ayr; sister Sheryl (Bob Smith) of Dexter, Minnesota; brothers-in-law Carl (Yvonne Schaefer) of Okeechobee, Florida, Kenny (Cathy Schaefer) of Diagonal, Iowa, Mike (Karen Schaefer) of Maloy, Iowa; sister-in-law Kay (Don Jandreau) of Weiser, Idaho; nieces, nephews, and friends.

Per Susan’s wishes, there was a private gathering on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2022, at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr before cremation occurred. She will be interred at a later date in the Veteran’s cemetery at Van Meter, Iowa. Online condolences may be left at www.armstrongfh.com.
