Leonard Pettit, 84, of Afton died June 20, 2021, at EveryStep Greater Regional Hospice Home in Creston.

Open visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m., with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2021, at Powers Funeral Home in Afton. A rosary service will be 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 23, 2021, at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Afton.

Father Joseph Pins will officiate the service. Burial will be in St. Edward’s Catholic Cemetery in Afton.

Leonard LeRoy Pettit, son of Lonnie L. and Lillian I. (Harrison) Pettit, was born Aug. 19, 1936, at his home in rural Madison County. He graduated from Creston High School with the class of 1955.

On Feb. 23, 1957, Leonard was united in marriage to Regina Margaret Weis at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Afton. This union was blessed with eight children: Tony, Doug, Deb, Jim, Randy, Sherri, Rick and Steve.

Leonard was always busy on the farm, whether it was raising cattle and hogs or making hay. Leonard owned and operated Pettit’s Meat Processing with his wife and family until retiring from the locker in 2001. Leonard’s greatest love was spending time with family on the farm. There was never a dull moment on the Pettit farm with a large family. He was always there to help on the farm and did so until his passing.

Leonard was a member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Afton.

Leonard is survived by his wife Regina of Afton; his children: David (Sherry) Pettit of Afton, their children: Brenda, Brandon, Blake and Tyler; Douglas (Georgia) Pettit of Afton, their children Allison and Erin; Deborah (Eric) Weaver-Ripperger of Afton, their children: Kyle, Cory, Morgan, Trenton and Breanna; James Pettit of Afton and his children Casey and Carissa; Randall (Jan) Pettit of Afton and their children, Alex and Sara; Sharon (Randall) Cooney of Pleasant Hill and their children, Dakota and Spencer and Richard (Jodie) Pettit of Audubon; 25 great-grandchildren; sisters Lois (Fritz) Weis of Afton, Linda Hanrahan of Prole and LaDonna (Mike) Short of Creston; brother Lowell (Janet) Pettit of Creston; brother-in-law Harry Weis of Des Moines; sister-in-law Kate Weis of Council Bluffs; special friends Jack Quee and Robert Moreland; along with many extended relatives and a host of friends.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, son Steven Pettit in 2000, great-grandson Matthew Weaver, son-in-law Bruce Weaver, sisters-in-law Joann Weis and Francis (Angelo) Scandroli and brothers-in-law Donald (Anna) Weis, Jack Hanrahan, Ed Weis and Pete (Ava Jean) Weis.
