They lived on a farm north of Fontanelle and went to the Little Red School House and then on to Fontanelle High School. He married Lois (Christensen) and to this union five children were born: Russell (Cindy Behnken) and children: Jordan, Tanner and Payton of Greenfield; Teresa (Jeff Carroll) and children: Tyler (Victoria Igbojionu) and Ashlyn of Oklahoma; Angie Christner and child Kama of West Des Moines; Scott of Greenfield; Ryan (Jacque College) and children Lachan, twins Labreck and Liberty of Earlham.

In 1964, he entered the U.S. Army and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan and was discharged in 1966.

In 1967 he went to work for Schildberg Construction, co-driving a rock truck and a low boy. He retired in 2010.

He was always fixing up or working on things that were broke. He made lots of bird and squirrel feeders to give away. Gusto will be missed by many who knew him.
