Helen Bryson

Helen Bryson, 91, of Afton died Monday, Dec. 21, 2020, at Crest Haven Care Centre in Creston. Celebration of Life Mass will be 10:30 Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020, at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Afton. Father Adam Westphal will officiate. Social distancing will be observed and masks are required. Services will be livestreamed on Powers Funeral Home’s Facebook page.

Burial will be in St. Edward’s Catholic Cemetery in Afton. Open visitation will be 4:30 to 8 p.m. Monday at Powers Funeral Home in Afton, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday with a Rosary at 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are to the St. Edward’s Church or East Union School for something special. Online condolences can be given at www.powersfh.com.

Helen Gertrude Bryson was born July 14, 1929, in Corning to Lawrence Anthony Kuhl and Priscilla Margaret Meuer. She graduated from Corning High School and attended college at Marycrest College in Davenport. After college, Helen lived and taught in Villisca. She was united in marriage to Roland Bryson in Corning Dec. 28, 1955.

After marriage, she worked in Omaha as a typist for a short time. Later they moved back to Corning and six children joined this union. They moved to Creston and then a farm nine miles north of Afton.

In 1969, Helen began teaching at EUHS. In 1980 Helen moved to Afton. She retired in 1994. She was a member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Afton and PEO.

Survivors include her six children: Beth Wallace of Davenport, Matt (Vicki) Bryson of Las Vegas, Nevada, Katherine Simmerman of Osceola (Ed Palmer), Richard Bryson of Afton, Andrew Bryson of Longmont, Colorado, Jeanne Bryson of Iowa City; 10 grandchildren: Kathleen (Jared) Gregory, Joe Wallace, Justin Bryson, Derek Bryson, Nicole (Shaun) Brice, Jami Cosner, Jennifer Danly, Ryan Bryson (fiancé Haleigh Weatherly), Stacia (Brock) Boswell, Chris Bryson; three great-grandchildren: Parker Gregory, Maggie Gregory and Josey Boswell and her beloved dachshund Milo.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Roland Bryson, daughter in-law Tammy Bryson in 2010, son in-law Jim Wallace in 2019, brother Robert, Richard Kuhl and her sister Pat Fees.
