Through the hard times of the last few weeks, as the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have continued to change daily life, many have struggled to find a means of entertainment. John Walters, known locally for his extensive wrestling knowledge, has tackled a new front of entertaining the masses. Cards. Walters started toying with cards last August, watching sleight of hand magic tricks as a means to help escape recent loss in his life.
Market rate housing in Creston is hard to come by. The Union County Development Association housing development committee wants to partner with the city to get two four-unit apartment buildings built along Adams Street.
After the first positive COVID-19 test for a Union County resident last week, emergency management director Jo Duckworth urged the Union County Board of Supervisors to sign a declaration of a public health emergency at its regular meeting Monday.
Greater Regional Health announces an additional healthcare service to the community by the way of virtual health. Virtual healthcare will be an option for patients in multiple service lines.

Union County Democratic caucus was held 5:30 p.m. March 24 at the Restored Creston Depot. Marcia Fulton was nominated as permanent caucus chairman and Carol Smith as secretary. Nominated to the Union County Democratic Central Committee were: Precinct No. 1 Clint Brown, No. 2 Marcia Fulton, No. 3 Linda Huffman, No. 4 Julie Weisshaar, No. 5 Judy Woods, Afton Robin Cochley, Arispe Karen Simpson and Lorimor Susan Weibel.
The Creston girls track team got a new experience in Maryville Tuesday when it traveled to the Bearcat High School Invitational. The Panthers finished second in a five-team field. The meet followed the typical Missouri High School Athletic Association format, which included events such as the pole vault and the triple jump.
The Creston FFA Chapter and Southwestern Community College Agriculture Department partnered together to plant 52 deciduous trees valued at $9,995 in Creston during the week of April 13. The trees were planted at SWCC, Southern Prairie YMCA and Bill Sears softball and VFW baseball complexes. In addition, 16 London Plane trees were planted along the SWCC entrance on West Townline to replace the trees lost during the 2012 tornado.

Creston freshman distance runner Emily Wignall broke the school’s 1,500-meter record, winning the race at the Ram Invitational Thursday. Wignall, who just fell short of the mark in the home Lady Panther Relays Monday, broke away from the field Thursday to win in 5:07.02. That breaks the mark of 5:08.09 set at the 1992 state meet by Nathalie Binetruy.
East Union’s Mariah Kruse swept the sprints Tuesday at the East Union Invitational. The junior won the 100, 200 and 400, all in convincing fashion. The Eagles placed third overall. Bedford, with considerable more depth, won the meet.
Creston Municipal Utilities has joined a federal lawsuit against Sweden-based chemical manufacturer Syngenta Ag and its U.S. subsidiary Syngenta Crop Protection Inc. Filed in United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois March 8, the lawsuit requests reimbursement for costs incurred by community water suppliers (CWS) while removing atrazine from drinking-water supplies.

Spurred by three individual titles, the Creston boys track team finished second at Tuesday’s Charger Relays in the 2A Division. Panther distance runner Scott Vicker claimed the 3,200-meter and 1,600-meter titles with ease. It was Vicker’s first double-gold effort of the season. Sam Katzer garnered a victory at the 110 high hurdles, with a time of 15.87.
Creston School Board unanimously approved the 2005-06 budget during a special meeting Monday. District Business Manager Don Krings said the district’s tax rate will be $14.69 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. The rate is less than a cent different than last year. Including a fund balance of $2,094,741, the district’s budget for the year will be $18,055,451.
Monday’s girl’s Panther Relays was saturated with Denison-Schleswig’s victories -- and plenty of water, too. The Lady Monarchs won 12 of 19 events and scored 204 points in their second-straight Panther Relays victory. For the first time all season, the Creston girls team went an entire competition without a victory. The Panthers, who finished third overall in Class 2A, tallied five second-place and five third-place finishes.
