With the graduation of Maddie Moffitt and Jacque Jay, who each competed in three state meet events last spring, you’d think there would be some rebuilding in order for the Creston girls track and field team. But, 17 letter-winners are among the 29 candidates, including four runners with state meet experience, so the Panthers are poised for another good season, despite the loss of those senior standouts. Nine freshmen bolster a squad that includes six sophomores, eight juniors and six seniors.
Creston’s boys basketball team finished second in Western Iowa ratings (Classes 4A/3A) compiled by the Omaha World-Herald, finishing ahead of 23-1 Carroll and Sioux City East, 19-7 and third in the Class 4A state tournament. Creston’s fourth-place 3A team, 22-5, finished behind state champion Harlan (27-0) in the 4A/3A ratings. The Panthers, not rated in the previous Western Iowa list, vaulted to No. 2 on the strength of its run to the state tournament, and taking Harlan to the limit in a 42-41 semifinal defeat.
Five unearned runs allowed in the first inning set the tone for a possible mercy-rule blowout, but the Southwestern baseball team settled down and went a full nine innings with powerful Miami-Dade Community College Monday. Miami-Dade won 9-0. Jeremy Bates took the loss, with relief from Dane Housken, but only three of the runs were earned.

Greater Community Hospital treated 180 patients in the emergency room department during the month of February. Regular patients admitted for the month were 146 and 151 were discharged. Seventeen birthing mothers were admitted and 14 were discharged. Two patients required skilled care. The hospital admitted 18 same-day surgery patients and discharged 15. Eleven patients with emotional disorders were treated.
Pam Von Hagel, daughter of Jeannette and Lyle Quick of Creston recently had a poem published in “The Write Place,” a publication produced by Western Hills Area Education Agency 12.
Spring
As I walk along in the fading spring sunshine, I see the buds of flowers begin to sprout from the warm, damp earth.
I feel the cool breeze ruffle though my hair and twinge my cheeks the color of roses.
The morning’s spring shower has washed away some of the grim and grit to give a landscape the look of a freshly-cleaned youngster’s face.
The grass is bright and green now, bursting through the dark brown of the soil beneath.
Creston Medical Clinic won the city men’s noncompetitive league basketball tournament Sunday, defeating Howard R. Green in the finals. Members of the championship team were Mike Moffitt, Mel McKie, Gary Briley, Bob Kuhl, Curt Turner, Tim Kinkade, Brad Weberg and Larry Richardson.

Cullen Geist of Mount Ayr is in Des Moines today participating in Young America Day, a meeting designed to kick off political activity in 1966 for teenage Republicans and College Young Republicans of Iowa. Geist will be participating in the finals of the “Young America Speaks” contest in competition with winners in six other congressional district contests.
Mrs. Gary Kessler of Afton was elected president of Xi Beta Psi chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Thursday evening at the home of Mrs. Al Berg. Other officers elected were Mrs. Ronnie Kelly, Afton, vice president; Mrs. Berg, secretary; Mrs. William Fils, treasurer and Mrs. Roland Peterson, Afton, extension officer.
Plans for rebuilding the Green Valley Lake road, from the end of the present blacktop road north one mile and west to the park entrance, were announced today by the Union County Board of Supervisors. The rebuilding of the road to Farm-to-Market road standards is to be done this summer. The estimated cost to rebuilding the 1 3/8 miles is about $60,000 and will be paid for from the county’s secondary roads fund.
Fifty-five students will leave Creston High School April 2 at 6 a.m. to represent the school at the annual State Music Contest for solos and ensembles at Glenwood. The contest is sponsored by the Iowa High School Music Association. For music competition, schools are divided according to enrollment. Class A, in which Creston is entered, involves all schools with enrollments over 400.
