Southwestern Community College’s baseball team returned home Thursday for the first time this season. Something that had not been heard much of in the first few games of this season was heard loudly in its first games on the home diamond this season. The Spartan offense broke out for a combined 26 hits, including four homeruns, as they swept a pair from Iowa Lakes. Southwestern took the opener 7-5, then pulled out a wild 12-11 win in the nightcap.
A number of area wrestlers competed at the AAU state tournament Feb. 25 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. In the ‘A’ Division, Dylan Stein did not place at 65 pounds. In the ‘B” Division, Christian Ahrens did not place at 65 pounds. Drew Ehlen placed eighth at 80 pounds. Jaden Knight, from Mount Ayr, placed seventh at 100 pounds. Kaden Street did not place at 105 pounds. In the ‘C’ Division, Justin Parsons was eighth at 70 pounds. Isaac Shields did not place at 75 pounds. Kolby Hulett was fifth at 120 pounds. Keaton Street did not place at 125 pounds. Garon Wurster did not place at 125 pounds. Jackson Kinsella was second at 152 pounds. Andy Weis qualified at 189 pounds but did not wrestle due to injury. Logan Osterhout was fourth at 260 pounds.
Representatives with Garden and Associates met with Creston City Council during last week’s council meeting to discuss options for the city’s plan to improve streets throughout Creston. After researching and evaluating Creston’s streets, Austin Smith of Garden and Associates presented the council with a list of 12 streets in Creston, along with estimated costs to repair those streets.

These days, instructors don’t even need to be in the same room as their students to conduct a live class. All they need is a couple of television screens and some fancy equipment. Southwestern Community College received the Cisco C-40 Videoconferencing equipment for its campus in Creston and Osceola center.
Greenfield Fire Chief Mike Ladd is at the helm of a major transition for Greenfield Fire Department. Ladd said the move to the new Greenfield Fire Department building has been a major group effort by the volunteer firefighters of Greenfield Fire Department. ”On every department, you’ve got a plumber. You’ve got a carpenter. You’ve got an electrician,” he said. “Everybody contributes something. We painted and did a lot of things.” Ladd said the firefighters have been constantly working on the building, and more than 2,000 hours of volunteer time have been spent on it.
Creston junior Colby Taylor was selected to the first team, junior Luke Neitzel was named to the second team for the second consecutive year and junior Trey Thomsen received honorable mention on the Hawkeye 10 boys basketball all-conference teams.

It was Sept. 13, 1974 - Friday the 13th - Bob Kessler, Creston’s acting police chief, called about 10 a.m. and told 22-year-old Bill Heatherington to report to work at 3 p.m., as the city’s newest police officer. Heatherington, 55, will retire Tuesday after 33 years of service on the Creston Police force.
Dr. Mark Jones of Omaha, a member of three state tournament teams at Corning 1976-78, was among eight inductees in the Iowa High School Basketball Hall of Fame. Also inducted as a coach was Tom Goodman, who finished his career as coach at West Central Valley of Stuart before retiring at the end of a 30-year coaching career at eight schools. He took three different schools to the state championship game. Jones went on to play at Creighton University after finishing his Corning career under coach Percy Stielow. With 1,337 career points he remains as Corning’s all-time leading scorer and his 25.0 per-game average as a senior helped him earn first team all-state honors.
Quick thinking on the part of two local law enforcement officers resulted in the removal of more than $500,000 worth of drugs from circulation and the arrest of an Arizona man Sunday. Creston Police Chief Jamie Christensen said Creston officer Jeremy Schaffer stopped a Ford pickup after a report was received of an erratic driver in the 600 block of New York Avenue. Christensen said 23 individually packaged bricks of marijuana with a total weight of 465 pounds were confiscated after the vehicle was impounded.
