Briar Cliff senior Jay Wolfe of Creston was named Great Plains Athletic Conference Player of the Year in the All-GPAC honors released Wednesday. Briar Cliff junior Jackson Lamb of Greenfield joins Wolfe on the all-conference first team. Ethan Freidel was selected to the second team, while Kyle Boerhave and Jaden Kleinhesselink each made the honorable mention list.

Lois Brown, 94, of Lenox was honored at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines Saturday afternoon during a recognition ceremony of some of the oldest living girls basketball players as the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union celebrated 100 years of girls state tournaments. Brown was a forward on Lenox teams that placed second in the one-class six-player state tournament in both 1938 and 1939.

Nine News Advertiser area girls basketball players were named to the all-conference Pride of Iowa teams released Friday. Sam Stewart was a unanimous pick for first team all-conference. The other area first team selection was Morgan Shuey of Southwest Valley. Mount Ayr and Southwest Valley both landed players on the second team all-conference list as Kierston Klommhaus represented the Raiderettes and Jentry Schafer was honored for the Timberwolves. Honorable mentions are Rachel Sobotka of Mount Ayr, Lexie Haer of SWV, Lexi Shike of Nodaway Valley, TJ Stoaks of Lennox and Esst Union’s Callie Gossman.

Three Creston boys basketball players received honors as members of the 2018-19 Hawkeye 10 all-conference team. Kylan Smallwood received a unanimous selection for first team honors, his fourth consecutive year with all-conference honors. Brance Baker was the second Panther to receive all-conference honors with a second team selection. Cael Kralik is the third Panther to find his way onto the all-conference team, receiving honorable mention honors.

12 years ago (2013)

The third member of the Creston Neitzel family to participate in a Shrine Bowl football game was visited by officials from Iowa’s 40th edition of the all-star contest Tuesday. Rich Hein and Bob Day of the Za-Gig-Zig Shrine Temple formally welcomed Panther all-stater Luke Neitzel to the South squad, and informed him of the schedule and player expectations leading up to the July 27 game in the UNI-Dome at Cedar Falls.

Murray junior guard Kate Patton was named to the Iowa Newspaper Association’s third-team all-state for Class 1A. Patton led the Mustangs with 17.3 points per game and 136 steals, while also finishing second on the team with 63 assists.

A new neighbor is coming to uptown. iWireless, a nationwide T-Mobile affiliate, once operated out of Quik Pawn on Highway 34, will open a 1,000-square-foot store front Monday on the corner of Elm and Montgomery streets. ”It was time for iWireless to expand,” said Marketing Rep Dani Duns of the locally owned communications business.

Creston senior Brianna Maitlen earned honorable mention all-conference honors in the Hawkeye 10 Conference as announced this week. Maitlen was the lone representative for a Creston team that finished 6-17 overall and 3-10 for eighth place in the conference.

Four-time state champion Jake Marlin and 2013 champion Keaton Hulett, a two-time finalist, shared top honors at the Creston/Orient-Macksburg wrestling banquet Sunday night at Creston High School.

16 years ago (2009)

Iowans experienced one of the worst storm seasons in it’s history during 2008. The first EF5 tornado in 32 years tore through Parkersburg and 104 other tornadoes touched down, tying the second all-time high. A total of 13 Iowans lost their lives in severe weather-related accidents. Tuesday, more than 60 people came to Southwestern Community College for the annual storm watch training seminar put on by the National Weather Service.

Location, Location, Location. Originally on Maple Street in downtown Creston, Maurices has moved to a brand new store on the south side of Creston just north of the Walmart Super Center. ”We are really excited about the move,” store manager Ashley Crill said. “There will be a lot more traffic driving by the store and more potential customers seeing our store and remembering where we are.” The doors officially open for the public 11 a.m. Friday.

Two Creston forwards received honorable mention on the Hawkeye 10 Conference girls basketball selections released Tuesday. Senior Megan Birchard and junior Kierra Smith represent Creston on the all-conference honor list.

Creston finished fourth in the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s State Bowling Championships Saturday at Plaza Lanes. Keokuk won the Class 1A girls state bowling title with a score of 2,847. Creston was fourth at 2,619 behind Oelwein and Newton.
