Creston beat Clarke in the opening round of Class 3A Region 8 action Friday night 75-35, advancing through the first round for the second year in a row over Clarke.
Creston/O-M advanced two of its four district tournament wrestlers to the Class 2A state tournament Saturday. Junior Jackson Kinsella will be the second-seeded wrestler at 182 pounds in this year’s tournament. Teammate Sam Chapman, ranked fourth at 195 pounds by The Predicament, is not seeded in his first state tournament appearance.
The Southern Prairie YMCA Stingray Swim Team had 16 swimmers compete in the 2020 YMCA Sectional Swim Meet Sunday at the Wellmark YMCA in Des Moines. Out of the 48 individual events the Stingrays swam on Sunday, 27 of them were personal best times.
Creston Community High School speech received three large group all-state nominations after the Iowa High School Speech Association State Competition Saturday in Waukee. Of these qualifying groups, reader’s theatre and choral reading will be performing at the IHSSA All-State festival next Saturday in Ames.

A proposed city-ordinance change would give local police more authority when responding to parties. Creston City Council approved the first reading of a disorderly houses ordinance that would replace the current “houses of ill fame” section.
The ninth-ranked Harlan boys basketball team defeated Creston 69-49 Tuesday night. But what took place in a packed CHS gym was measured far beyond the scoreboard. More than 1,100 t-shirts were sold during the “Gold Out,” a service-learning venture by students in Environmental And Spatial Technology (EAST) classes at Creston High School to raise money for childhood cancer research and awareness in a partnership with the American Cancer Society.
Three Creston/O-M Panthers are advancing to Thursday afternoon’s quarterfinals in Class 2A at the State Wrestling Tournament, while two others will be competing in the consolation second round. None of the five qualifying Panthers were eliminated during the first day of action at Wells Fargo Arena.
A “pocket park” idea adjacent to the former Lincoln School building in Creston is the latest twist to a proposal to move Gibson Memorial Library to the facility. After hearing from Gibson Memorial Library Board President Ann Coulter Monday on the library board’s plan to pursue a move to the former school at 1001 W. Jefferson St., the Creston School Board was also presented a letter from community member Karl Knock.

Two Creston Police officers have announced plans to run for Union County Sheriff. Sgt. Rick Piel and Senior Patrolman Jamie Christensen are both running on the Republican ticket.
It was a day of highs and lows for Creston’s wrestling team Saturday at the sectional meet. The good news is Creston advanced six wrestlers to the district tournament in Atlantic. The Panthers crowned five champions: Willie Harris at 112 pounds, Michael Mickey at 125, Andrew Hayes at 160, Adam Travis at 171 and Tyler Hanson at 189; Cody Downing was runner-up at 135.
Deficit spending has come to Creston. The Creston City Council voted 5-1 at Tuesday’s meeting to publish a proposed budget for the fiscal year beginning in July that includes $72,946 more expenses than projected revenues. The shortfall would be covered by the city’s undesignated general fund balance, which today is approximately $642,800.
After beating Adair-Casey 56-42 Tuesday night, Murray head coach Jerry Brown celebrated his 600th career coaching victory in style. “My wife and I came home and ate cinnamon rolls and drank milk,” the 42-year veteran coach said. “Usually the big night is going over to Osceola and getting eggs.” The win puts Brown in elite history. He becomes only the second coach ever in Iowa to reach the 600-win plateau.

Jane Brown, a physical therapist at Greater Community Hospital, was the recipient of a plaque of appreciation at last Saturday’s basketball game in Creston. The Creston coaching staff recognized Brown with the plaque for helping several Creston athletes bounce back from injuries.
The old hospital in Creston came closer to demolition Monday when the Union County Board of Supervisors agreed to accept the property and transfer its title to the city of Creston. The board became involved in the old building because delinquent property taxes were owed on the dilapidated building by a private citizen and control of the structure eventually reverted to the county if the taxes were not paid.
