ADC annual meeting promises bingo, food

AFTON - Free pizza, drinks, dessert and a chance to meet members of the Afton Development Corporation are all in store for the organization’s annual meeting.

The ADC will host their annual meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at the Afton Community Center.

Fun and games will follow a quick meeting to appoint the ADC’s board of directors. Bingo with cash prizes will be held using the community center’s bingo machine.

The organization typically meets at 5 p.m. every fourth Thursday of the month at the Afton Wi-Fi Center.

ADC President K’Lea Johnson said this meeting, which is required as a part of the organization’s yearly operations, is a great chance to meet those behind an organization dedicated to improving the quality of life in Afton.

“We want people to come in, get to know us and improve Afton,” she said. “I want to point out that there’s no expectations, we want to feel open.”

The ADC was originally created as a way of developing the commercial sides of Afton, connecting businesses together and supporting growth. Over time, motivation changed to improving the health and well-being of Afton.

One of the ADC’s recent projects is the Afton walking trail, which loops around the east side of the city. The trail was created to encourage a healthy and immediate way to exercise during the warmer months. Trails and shelters along Afton Lake also help meet these goals.

Johnson sees these types of developments in Afton as ways to help encourage engagement in Afton. “We want people to live and work and take their kids to school here,” she said.

A major concern the organization has is difficulty in available housing within Afton. The annual meeting serves as a way for the ADC to receive new ideas on how best to serve their community.
