Throwback Thursday

Just a mention of Southwestern Community College’s volleyball program and coach Rita Schroeder’s name is sure to come up — in fact, Southwestern’s home court was named after the longtime Spartan coach in 2012. On Saturday, Schroeder becomes the third inductee in Southwestern’s Athletic Hall of Fame, joining the ranks of Ron “Fox” Clinton and Bill Krejci.

A levy that would have increased property and income surtaxes in the Creston Community School District will not move forward, following a unanimous vote by the Creston Community School Board Wednesday. The board voted 4-0 against the instructional support program-levy, opting instead to pursue other options to narrow a projected $1.2 million spending gap over the next three years.

19 years ago (2006)

The last thing Creston/Orient-Macksburg wrestling coach Darrell Frain expected was such a comfortable victory over Shenandoah Thursday night. After all, this is the same Mustang squad that suffered a pair of 10-point dual losses to Class 3A’s No. 2-rated team Lewis Central (39-29) and Glenwood (37-27), which is ranked second in Class 2A. Creston/O-M’s margin was a much less cozy 46-27 margin.

The Creston/Orient-Macksburg wrestling team will lead the field at the 51st John Harris Invitational, which will be held Friday and Saturday. The Panthers earned four first seeds, the most among any of the 21 participating teams. The Panthers’ Andrew Long (103), Tyler Linderman (112), Quin Leith (119) and Stoney Stuart (130) all received first seeds.

Administrators and board members from Orient-Macksburg and Nodaway Valley school districts met Wednesday to discuss sharing between the schools during the 2006-07 school year. ”We’re here to build relationships and think of ways we can do that economically and efficiently,” said Jerry Waugh, Orient-Macksburg interim superintendent.

29 years ago (1996)

The city of Creston already has one in place and the Union County Board of Supervisors is looking to do the same. The supervisors, at their regular meeting Monday, discussed implementing a county policy that would require deputies to repay law enforcement academy training costs if the deputy leaves the county for another job soon after completing the training.

Initial ground work for demolition of the former Creston High School building may begin as soon as the end of this week, after bid approval at Monday night’s Creston Community School District Board of Director’s meeting. The board accepted the low bid of $179,600 from Peterson Contractors Inc. of Reinbeck as presented by Dennis Gourley, district business manager.

All but one grade scored higher than the previous year in a report to the Creston school board Monday on high school standardized tests taken last fall. All but the 11th grade achieved higher core total scores than during the last testing period and all but the 11th grade scored at or above the 50th percentile when compared to Iowa students.

Creston boys basketball coach Mike Gerleman learned a couple of lessons in Tuesday’s 67-56 victory over Red Oak. He found out the second unit can play well against a good team. Red Oak was barely able to dent Creston’s 22-point lead in the final four minutes of the third quarter. Panther backups handed the starters a 58-41 lead entering the final period.

39 years ago (1986)

Chris Lundy of Creston will be one of the main performers in “Innocence and the Dream,” a dance production at 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Performing Arts Hall at Drake University in Des Moines. Lundy is a Creston dance instructor and Drake dance student. Lundy also instructs in Fontanelle and assists with ballet and jazz classes in Des Moines.

The notion that Harlan’s wrestling team was improving and could challenge Creston was quickly tossed aside here Thursday when the Panthers won the first five matches to take a 21-0 lead on their way to crushing the Cyclones, 51-9.

Bob Sobotka, whose highest previous game was a 204, came within two pins of rolling a perfect game here Thursday night at Lett’s Bowl. Carrying a 145 average for the Eagles in the Union league, Sobotka left the 7-10 split on the 12th ball to finish with 298, getting a Brooklyn hit on this final ball.
